Editorial
February has been a rough month. We have this nasty virus going around
work that lasts about 3 weeks. So here I am again down to the end of the
month in spite of my goal of releasing this newsletter closer to the
middle of the month.
It also has slowed down my adding new entries to the Anime Companion
Supplement web pages. I was able to get another book review done in this
issue for Kenshin fans.
Interesting things are happening in the industry tho' For some time
several anime companies have been shifting to DVD only in their
releases. Now we have several companies doing manga straight to graphic
novel format, even unflipped. For manga fans this is good news as many
fans never buy 'comic books' instead they wait for the graphic novel to
come out. For distribution this is even better as many regular book
stores and libraries are stocking more graphic novels which means more
sales.
Check out the new entries in this issue for many titles being released
in this manner.

Ryoma: Life of a Renaissance Samurai

Romulus Hillsborough has done a great job of producing a literary
biography of this figure. Ryoma was a major player in the events in the
1860s that led to the downfall of the bakufu. Largely unknown outside of
Japan, this one person played such a crucial role in Japanese history
that without him things could have turned out very different. Ryoma was
a Tosa han samurai who, like many others at the time, abandoned his han
to become a ronin during the turmoil of the 1860s. But unlike many other
ronin he had a certain flexibility of viewpoints, even to the degree of
listening to what gunkan bugyô (commissioner of warships) Katsu Kaishu
had to say, when in fact Ryoma had gone to kill him. Katsu so impressed
Ryoma that he agreed to work with him becoming the right hand man of a
bakufu official while maintaining his own ideals. Ryoma was crucial in
the founding of the Japanese navy, helping negotiating agreements
between anti-bakufu hans, the resignation of the last shogun,
establishing the model for the new government and international Japanese
commercial shipping. He was also known for packing a six shooter, going
on the first honeymoon in Japan, being a master of Hokushin Itto Ryu
sword techniques, and while still a fugitive using international law to
sue the powerful Kii han and winning. All of this before he died at the
age of 32 assassinated shortly before the Meiji Era began.
Again I recommend this book to fans of Rurouni Kenshin, you will see
many familiar names here plus many that do not appear in the show
expanding much of the knowledge you may already have of this exciting
period of Japanese history.

A premiere title from a new company. A-G is the latest entry into both
the hentai market and the manga anthology market. The four stories in
the first issue are both of Japanese and domestic origin, A-G is
actively soliciting stories for the magazine giving aspiring artists a
chance at getting published. Of course the hentai content may put off a
few artists. Besides the stories this issue includes article on cg art
techniques, and ads for distributors of various products, which not only
helps the magazine pay their bills but buts more stiff into buyers'
hands.
If you like hentai this is one title you should check out.
