Editorial
March and April have been very unusual months for me. But the worse is
behind me and I am again able to turn my attention to getting an issue
of this newsletter out to folks. Luckily I was able to locate and unpack
the box that contained the book I am reviewing this month, Drunk as a
Lord by Shiba Ryotaro. Those interested in 19th century Japanese history
will want to check out this book of tales.
At least doing a double issue and numbering it as I am will mean that
this year's volume of this newsletter will end in December rather than
November as in the past.
Ok enough of this on to the rest of the issue.

Drunk as a Lord

In the last two issues I reviewed Romulus Hillsborough 's two books of
tales from the bakumatsu. He was not the first writer to produce a body
of literature set in that turbulent era. In Japan Shiba Ryotaro is
famous for such works. Two of Shiba's books are available in English.
Drunk as a Lord is a collection of four of his stories about a variety
of persons ranging from a daimyô to a lowly artisan. The authors stated
purpose is to illustrate the way daimyô acted and thought in this era.
While such an approach is mainly subjective there is still much in the
tales that is based on objective history and so will be of some interest
to those looking for information on this period. Readers who have read
Hillsborough 's books or seen the Rurouni Kenshin tales from the
bakumatsu will find themselves on familiar territory spotting many
landmarks even as much of what they read is new. To assist readers a map
of late Tokugawa Japan is included, as are a glossary, and a list of
persons with short descriptions. The introduction by Burritt Sabin and
the afterword by the author provide more information to orient the
reader.
My recommendation:
Check this one out and consider buying it.
