Dear Cal Friend,
Each year the California Alumni Association honors two junior
students (one man and one woman) with the ROBERT GORDON SPROUL AND
IDA B. SPROUL AWARDS. For 43 years, as a student, as an
administrator and - for 28 years - as University President, Robert
Gordon Sproul dedicated himself to building the University and
inspiring students. During those same years, Ida B. Sproul became
the friend of thousands of Californians and graciously served the
University as its First Lady. As a tribute, the California Alumni
Association established the Sproul Awards. They are considered the
highest honors junior students can achieve.
These awards recognize student leadership as measured by
participation in campus and/or community activities, and distinction
and excellence in scholarly achievement (a 3.0 or higher gpa).
The awards are $1000 each (financial need is not a factor) and they
are presented at the CAA Awards Recognition Dinner in October. The
recipients also receive framed certificates and accolades in the
California Monthly magazine, and their names are inscribed on a
permanent plaque at Alumni House.
Typewritten nominations including a signed Dean's Card Release Form
(which is part of the nomination form) and one letter of
recommendation are due Friday, March 13, 1998. STUDENTS MAY
SELF-NOMINATE. Please direct nominations and/or inquiries to Lynne
Witser, Alumni Scholarship Office, California Alumni Association,
Alumni House, Berkeley, CA 94720-7520. (510) 642-7281
