Aren't there University privacy policies against public posting of lists
of student name/SID pairs? ucb.class.ee40 and ucb.class42 are available
to anyone with a computer account at Cal, and are archived on DejaNews
indefinitely and so available to anyone in the world.

Using SID numbers, a malicious person can have a chance of performing all
sorts of privacy violations and worse.

regssl, for instance, will tell you if a particular student is registered,
or if a particular SID is registered, but it will not allow you to find
a SID from a student name or a student name from a SID. In fact, I don't
think that there is _any_ University system or office which is supposed
to allow the general public to find student names from SIDs or vice versa.
Obviously, University employees can find SIDs from the various databases
they get, but does that justify posting lists to Usenet, where they
remain indefinitely and are searchable from all over the world?

It seems to me that posting section membership (with date, time, and
location) electronically is already slightly questionable, but that
including SIDs is simply bad privacy practice.

Thanks for your message. As you can see I have canceled the ee42 posting, although
I don't have the authority to pull out the message on EE40. My apologies.

I appreciate your decision to do that, and I hope that the original poster
on ucb.class.ee40 will do likewise.

Of course, there are now copies floating around somewhere (e.g. on news
servers/web archives that don't honor cancels; and any reference copies
that any readers of these newsgroups might have made). I realize that
you are not the original poster and were just forwarding a copy of a
message, so the information was already out.

I could try to make up horrible scary scenarios, but the time I would
spend writing them or the time other people would spend reading them
would probably be better spent reading comp.risks.

Sometime I will write to a Dean or newspaper or something to ask that TAs
and other employees who get access to SIDs in their work be told in
training that SID/name pairs should not be disclosed to the public --
assuming that this is the position of the University, which I assume it is.

I remember discussing with some Rescomp people the various ways in which
an IP address (Home IP, In-Room Connection, etc.) could become paired with
its owner's name. My conclusion was that there were at least 10 or 15
possible techniques for associating IRC IP addresses with real names
and/or with room numbers. (The situation is "worse" for home-ip, where
anyone, anywhere in the world, can just look up your name from your IP
address.) Given that, the privacy situation with respect to campus Internet
use is initially fairly bad, and no doubt people _can_ illicitly obtain
private student information in many other ways. But there is really no
need to make this worse by including SIDs, which have the added privacy
disadvantage that, like SSNs, they can easily be used as a unique key for
joining multiple databases.

Anyway, thanks again for cancelling your message. A better way to get
that information out would be by private e-mail to all of the members of
the class, or (a compromise?) by listing section membership by SID _only_
(no names) on a www-inst.eecs web page (which can then be removed when
its useful lifetime is over).

There are other privacy risks in that, too, but while SIDs are printed
on the face of student ID cards, I won't worry about it quite so much. :-)
