Please look for the power strips. Don't open floorboxes.

Instructors, please pass this message on to the students who don't read
newsgroups, don't read the whiteboards, and don't read the notes placed
on the floorboxes.

It appears that there are some students who purposely ignore my messages
on the whiteboards and continue to open the floorboxes. If this
continues, I will start making random evening and weekend visits to the
labs. I will give you a warning the first time. On a second offense, I
will require you to come in and assist the janitors during our 5 pm
cleaning hours. If you are caught a third time, I will disable your
accounts first.

So far, no one has emailed us or informed us in any way that we are
lacking power strips. Frequently, I find floorboxes open right under
the powerstrips or adjacent to the powerstrips. This suggests that
students are just not paying attention to any notes or messages.

Please Don't Damage Instructional Equipment.

Much of what we have in the labs comes from Grants and Special
Educational Discounts. Previously a number of systems have been damaged
due to students unpluginng live equipment or carelessness with the
floorboxes. Yes, this does happen.

We have had the following occur on a frequent basis:

1. The floorboxes do not stay open on their own and will crimp and
smash cables.
2. We have had a number of PC's in the past suffer harddrive failure
due to students pulling the plug or turning off machines.

So please do not unplug our lab equipment or turn off the computers.

We have provided power strips in the labs for you to plug in personal
equipment. Please look for the power strips on top of the tables in 271,
273 and 275 Soda. For cs184, 169, and 160 classes, 330 Soda has power
strips also. Please do not unplug the computers or monitors. If you
can't find a power strip near you, please move to another seat.
