Because Firefox and Thunderbird were installed using the official
builds, you can upgrade them by running them as superuser and then
clicking Help and Check For Updates.

To run Firefox as superuser, hit Alt + F2 and use the command gksudo
firefox.
To run Thunderbird as superuser, hit Alt + F2 and use the command
gksudo thunderbird.
