One point interest me very much:
What's the best and easiest way to crosscheck for the accuratest and
correct UUID's ?
Which information is the most important and to choose as base ??
Which one needs extra observation ???
We have /boot/grub/menu.lst ...
... we have /etc/fstab ...
and
... I use blkid and UUIDcomp giving me this display
------------------------------------------
sna@WS222:~$ UUIDcomp
sda1 UUID=D2C47460C47448AD
sda5 UUID=edf0353d-b99b-41d6-b7aa-57fad83fab35
UUID=edf0353d-b99b-41d6-b7aa-57fad83fab35
sda6 UUID=0E1C68841C686923
X sda7 UUID=42e739b5-a525-43b0-a897-21378f3a94b9 #
UUID=652c9985-2254-48c7-a110-cff8ef2c8325 / ext3
defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
X sda8 UUID=47F7-9B3D UUID="42e739b5-a525-43b0-a897-21378f3a94b9 none
swap sw 0 0
sna@WS222:~$
------------------------------------------
Marked here with "X" means there is a mismatch and need extra check !!!
Normally I change the respective lines manually as following to see
better:
sda5 UUID=edf0353d-b99b-41d6-b7aa-57fad83fab35
UUID=edf0353d-b99b-41d6-b7aa-57fad83fab35
sda8 UUID=47F7-9B3D
UUID="42e739b5-a525-43b0-a897-21378f3a94b9 none swap sw 0 0
sda5 is OK and sda8 has mismatch to be checked and corrected !!
and the attached 2 files !
Your hints, suggestions and especially warnings how to check and
maintain UUIDs best and easiest are very welcome: TIA
Cheers, svobi

That looks like an ntfs/vfat partition
> UUID="42e739b5-a525-43b0-a897-21378f3a94b9 none swap sw 0 0
swap will obviously not work on such a partition. Apart from that a UUID
starting with " is at least special.
check and correct your fstab entries according to the real data given by your
hardware.
/boot/grub/menu.lst can then be updated with:
/usr/sbin/update-grub

Yes, I noticed some slowdown already !! ;-))

I deleted the 8.04 Beta installation just before writing my post and
noticed the shifting of the sda numbers !!! ;-D
That too was a reason to ask the mailing list how to control and
maintain the correctness of the systems vital settings, i.e.
UUID's !! ;-)
