Hey,

Did some quick research on the topic of buttons:

Buying our (maybe someones) own button maker can get pretty expencive (read
upwards of 400$ for punch and supplies) but there is a company based in
toronto that will do custom orders. http://www.babbleweb.ca/

There pricing is 40$ for 100 1 inch buttons. Not bad IMHO.

What do you guys think?

And I will check to see what printing prices are on campus, but its not open
on weekends.

As I was walking out of the caffe today, David mentioned to me that he's
been talking with a t-shirt printing guy about doing t-shirts, but he
didn't mention how much (price-wise) they were looking at.

Also, just a quick note, here's the t-shirt images I made up:

As for the brochure.. I'll talk to the guys out in Victoria, BC that are
more or less the leaders of Ubuntu Canada. They mentioned they were
doing a brochure/leaflet type thing. If not, we can set something up
ourselves, and use the Ubuntu brochure on their wiki.

Regarding regular meetings... what do you guys feel comfortable with? Is
twice a month too much? I was thinking if we went twice a month, we
could meet on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at 2PM... if
not, then just pick one Saturday every month at 2PM for regularly
scheduled meetings. This is not to say we can't get together outside of
these.. we can also have irregularly scheduled meetings ;)

I will give the Eaton Center a call on Monday and see how much they'd
charge a non-profit group to have a table set up in the mall for a few
hours, and post here what I hear from them.

For those that didn't catch it, the URL for the Toronto wiki page is:

Feel free to modify this page as you see fit, or create sub-pages for
any specific ideas you may have.

Thank you all for coming out today, it was great to see so many people
out to our first meeting. I look forward to working with this group.

I was also happy to meet everybody. We have a great bunch of people together and can accomplish anything we put our minds to. I'd be happy to attend each meeting held on Saturdays (with the occasional absence due to work).

On the topic of the 16th (which is unfortunately a Saturday I will miss) I am still preparing the CD insert. I was just thinking, if I got into too much technical detail about loading the BIOS and such it might scare the users away. It IS a 12cm x 12cm piece of paper, and it conflicts with my first ideal paragraph:

"This disc contains self-starting software which you may try without modifying your computer or it's contents. You may place the disc into your computer's CD-ROM drive and reboot. Choose the first option, "Start LiveCD" to begin your Ubuntu experience!"

Does anybody think I should keep it to something like "consult your PC's manual to alter this setting in your BIOS" (or something similar)? I imagine it would be best to try and include generic instructions, but the reality is nearly every BIOS has a different layout, rendering the directions only useful for a small percentage of the people who try them.

I will keep it black and white & text only, to save printing costs.

I think that the majority of PCs are already set to boot from the CD
first anyway. In my experience, the BIOS usually defaults to that
setting. So unless the user has manually gone into their BIOS and
changed it so the hard drive boots first, there shouldn't be any
problem. The blurb inside the Ubuntu 6.06 CD jacket even makes that
assumption:

"To use Ubuntu as a Live CD, put this CD in the CD drive and turn on or
restart your computer. To install Ubuntu, run the Live CD and
double-click on the 'Install' icon. The default installation will erase
all existing data from your computer. If this is not what you want,
follow the instructions carefully during installation."

Do you guys think it'd be safe for us to make the same assumption? Like
I said, in my experience, the majority of computers default to booting
from removable drives first.

Oh. Well, if that's in the jacket of the CDs that we give out, is it necessary to also include that on a CD insert? Or do our discs not include the same jackets?

This is true. Perhaps the insert could direct people to a place to get
support, and some other information, ie. the chatbox we were discussing
about supporting local users ourselves. I think this is a key idea:
supporting local users. Not only are we promoting and sharing Ubuntu,
but we also need to offer some kind of support. Perhaps this could be
outlined on the insert, by means of a reference to the Linux Caffe, a
website, a forum, or what have you.

Agreed. I believe I will rather print a single-sided insert directing the user to
a) the chat page of linuxcaffe.ca
b) the the street address of the linux caffe
c) the official ubuntu forums
d) the Ubuntu Document Storage Facility (http://doc.gwos.org)

Of course, some of us will have to remain in the chat page and such to be there for the people who actually try it. I'll hang around in there when I can.
