Dear Group members,

I use an Ubuntu Maverick and I would like to use my fax modem ("Intel
Corporation FA82537EP 56K V.92 Data/Fax Modem PCI (rev 04)" by lspci),
but I haven'n find any useable info. I find your site after lot of
search. I see you can compile deb packages for modems. Can you compile
to me an Maverick driver package for "2.6.35-22-generic-pae"?

It's most important for me.

Thank you for your help.
Best regards,
Andras Tim

Hi Andras,

I put in the files section the package that I compiled.
I hope it is useful.

Congratulations. If you are reading this file then your modem driver
should be
installed properly. Remember to reboot with the proper kernel if the
driver was
not able to be loaded.

-Quick Info

Your Modem should be accessible from both these locations:
/dev/537
/dev/modem

-Connecting to the internet

Right click on your panel bar(at the top or bottom of the screen)
Click "Add to Panel..."
Select "Modem Monitor" from the icons
Click "Add"
Click "Close"
Right-click on the new modem icon
Click "Properties"
Check "Enable this connection"

-Getting Gnome-ppp

Gnome-ppp seems to be a better program for dialing, but it is not
installed by default. To download this program:
sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp -y

Then you will need to configure it. (You may need to logout, then
login)
Applications -> Internet -> GNOME PPP
Type in your Username, Password, and dialup Phone number.
Click Setup button
Under the 'Modem' tab
Device: /dev/537 (or /dev/modem)
Type: choose Analogue modem
Speed: 115200 or lower
Phone Line: Tone
Volume: High
Wait for dialtone: checked
Under the 'Networking' tab
Leave Dynamic IP Address and Automatic DNS both enabled
Under the 'Options' tab
Abort connecting if no dialtone: checked
Check carrier line: checked
Check default route: checked
Ignore terminal strings(stupid mode): checked
Close and reopen Gnome-ppp
Connect

-Wrap Up

Hi Andras,

The first error is here:

"No such device"
Seems to indicate that you may not have a 537EP modem.

Please see the following section on the FAQ listed to verify whether
you have a 537EP modem:
"How can I tell if my modem is Intel 536EP or 537EP?"

Hi Alan,
Andras said that you compiled the driver for 537SP, instead of 537EP?
I don't not know for certain. If you want to try resolving this issue
for Andras, I can assist in any way you like.

If you don't wish to continue with Andras, then that is fine also. I
already told Andras that I do not have time to make drivers for every
kernel of Ubuntu.

All the best,
Stephen Pinker

PS.
Well done packaging the driver. I was impressed to see someone take
initiative to try it for themselves.
