Ubuntu modems, started in 2008, appears to finally have reached the
end of it's life. I no longer have the time to continue packaging the
Intel 536EP and 537EP dialup modem drivers. I have to move on with
other things in life, and I am thankful for everyone that I have
gotten the chance to interact with along the way. Thank you to
Philippe Vouters for continuing to keep the driver able to compile
with newer kernels.

I do not have intentions of releasing a packaged version of the driver
for Ubuntu 12.04. If anyone would be interested in carrying on with
this project, I would be willing to help you do so and advise you.
Otherwise, this group will not be continue to host any further
updates. Thanks again to everyone.

Thanks for the effort. I gave up on internal softmodems and bought a
controller-based Rosewill USB modem.

Sepero, when I was first thinking about trying out linux with Ubuntu
Jaunty, it was your modem package that gave me the confidence to
believe that Ubuntu would probably work "fully" with all my old
hardware, so there was no excuse for me not to try it. So I tried it,
and it worked! That was more than two years ago, and I've been a
regular linux user ever since.

For a variety of reasons, I'm still using Jaunty and the modem package
you prepared for it. Every time I connect with pon, I am amazed by the
technical knowledge that you and Philippe Vouters must have, to have
been able to make this support possible, and the amount of work that
went into it. Thanks to you both.

Hello, Sepero. I would like to know how much work is involved on building the package before any commitment. Would you please send me the guide lines for this?

The process of packaging the drivers is relatively straight forward. I
recorded a video about 2 years ago of myself describing how to compile
and build the packages. Compiling is generally the tedious part. I
think there may be an extra step to compiling the driver that isn't
listed in the video, so I may have to give a tip on that.

To make packaging super easy, I made special scripts (53X_prep.sh)
specifically for packaging the drivers. All a person has to do is plug
in a few variables and run them.

I think it would be great if someone(s) could continue this project.
If you are interested, have a look over it. Here is the video and
information.

Also for anyone interested in continuing the project, there one issue
with compiling the driver. It is that you actually have to have the
latest release of Ubuntu, and its kernel installed. If you are the
type of person that likes to have the latest Ubuntu on your system,
then taking over this would fit you well. Personally, I've been
running on Ubuntu 10.10 for a long time, and I don't like to upgrade
often. So that is another big reason that updating the package has
become tedious for me.

Hey thanks a lot, you saved my life a few years ago when I had to use a modem!
