In the text files produced by the scanmodem utility, and possibly on
web pages I read along the way, are lists of the various 537EP
subsystems the driver will support. I have had success with one that
isn't in those lists. It was the standard 56K modem sold with my
Gateway computer in 2004, so there are probably many of them around.

Some of what I think is the most relevant info about the modem
follows. If needed, I can supply a lot more. Its specs are at
http://www.intel.com/design/modems/products/537ep.htm . What seems
different about this subsystem from the others discussed is that it
appears to have an actual Intel chip.

The PCI card has some stickers and/or labels:
537EPU
US: RIGM501B537EPU

and on it are two chips whose markings seem relevant:

Approx. 1" square chip:
FA82537EP
Intel .. '02

Approx. .25" x 3/4" chip:
Si3017-KS

scanout.txt report (excerpt):
CLASS=0703
NAME="Modem: Intel Corporation FA82537EP 56K V.92 Data/Fax Modem PCI "
PCIDEV=8086:1080
SUBSYS=8086:1009

From one of the scanmodem output files:

For candidate card in slot 03:04.0, firmware information and bootup
diagnostics are:
PCI slot PCI ID SubsystemID Name
---------- --------- --------- --------------
03:04.0 8086:1080 8086:1009 Modem: Intel Corporation FA82537EP 56K V.
92 Data/Fax Modem PCI

Partial info from WinXP System Hardware Info:

Device Instance ID:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1080&SUBSYS_10098086&REV_03\4&2E98101C&0&20F0

-----------------

scanmodem did not detect a chipset, but installing the 537EP driver
anyway still seemed the obvious thing to do.

I have successfully controlled the modem with:
--picocom (was my first indication that the modem was going to work)
--pppconfig, then pon/poff (reliable dialup to ISP)
--Network Admin, enable ppp0 connection.

Most reliable method seems to be the lowest level. Least reliable is
the wvdial-related ones. wvdialconf has never successfully detected
the modem.

Using Ubuntu 9.04.
