Something for everyone in this video from UDS Dallas. (about 45 min duration)

It's about planning and executing on ideas generated by Ubuntu teams.

This is the wiki Jono is speaking to during the talk. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Roadmaps/Lucid

What does the Australian team want to do for the next release?

Cheers
James

It would be good to have some officially-sanctioned press ads that each
LoCo can raise money to run in local newspapers. But I don't think we
personally would be able to use it as we're very inactive down here.

I can't really think of anything else that I'd really want at the
moment.

I have created a wiki page for a Lucid Roadmap.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Roadmaps/Lucid/AustralianTeam

As we 'Really' are state based, can we come up with some ideas for
each State.
Starting off with at least organising a 'Release party'

Cheers,

Don't know how we would organise fund raising for press ads or how to go about getting them "officially sanctioned". Anyone done this sort of thing before? Got any tips?

I'm wondering if there is also an opportunity to get some free press by contacting the local newpapers with a newsworthy story around release time? Of course there are also plenty of tree-friendly ways to get the word out.

What do you all think about targeting traditional media to promote Ubuntu? Is it a good medium for reaching potential Ubuntu converts?

Cheers

Fund Raising - Linux Australia and/or Lugs with Fund-raising ability.

'Officially Sanctioned' - from Ubuntu if we want to use their logo.

How about targeting other 'Computer' Clubs in your local town?
Introduce them to 'Ubuntu'.

I'm wondering if the idea is being taken the wrong way...

Is it so important to have them using ubuntu? or is it better that they know of ubuntu? because in a perfect world we would have both! but in the real world I think its only going to be achievable to have one at this stage.  Whilst Microsoft spends millions on advertising/vendor incentives then it will always be an uphill battle! to add that with no official funding as such to even compete (and it would be pointless to even bother!) then word of mouth is our best weapon against the giant! and certainly targeting local on-line access centres, adult-Ed etc... would be by far more eventful than a full page spread in a daily rag!

my 2 cents worth! :-)

Yes Scott, we need to start at the grass roots level, given the
resources available to Ubuntu-au.

I subscribe to the ubuntu-marketing email list
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-marketing
and they talk about this stuff all of the time.

The Danish loco team recently had a stall in a shopping centre, giving
demos to shoppers.
This is the type of thing is what we need to do.

Resorting to chain mail to spread word of Ubuntu? Sorry. All chains stop
here. We don't want to sully Ubuntu's reputation.

Actually on the subject of the Danish loco team, I've been thinking of
having a stall at the Joondalup Festival in April showing off Ubuntu and
giving away CDs. The details for prospective stallholders are not
available yet but should be shortly, so I currently don't know how much
it would cost me (especially since we'd need electricity for the event
too).

I'd need another volunteer from Perth to help me man the stall.

I'm willing to dig my own money into this (depending on how much it
costs) but if Canonical could help in any way that would be fantastic.

If I can't get another Perth Ubuntu user involved I'd try and reach out
to other distro communities to make it a general Linux stall.

Chris.

Hi Chris,

Have you tried getting in contact with PLUG[1] the linux user group
there in Perth and see if they would like to get involved. Then you
might be able to get some help from Linux AUS[2] with things like PLI
etc

Regards
Dale
