in VLC while playing the video are you able to go to: Tools > Codec Information, and copy what is listed as the video codec and the audio codec?

This type of video has been supported for a while:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/32452

Try installing gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, or gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
- i'm not sure which codecs are in each set, but i usually install both
(i figure it's better to have a bad codec than no video). There are
also -multiverse versions of both that might be worth trying if the
first two don't work.

how big is the video file? and are you able to attach it?

If you can, are you able to throw it into Openshot video editor, and cut it down to maybe a 10 second sample and attach that?

The other option is, head into terminal and type: vlc moviename.avi and see if anything suspicious shows up in the terminal.
