It looks like we will not be able to convert the whole site to green without a lot of trouble - there appear to be hundreds of little images here and there. We probably only use a very small subset of them, but it would not be easy to work through which ones they are.

Karin, is this blue watercolor among the themes that is available without cost? If so, I'd like to go live with it immediately while we explore other options.

Perhaps I was too hasty - can we get a mockup of the site with the new skin?

Hi Michael,

The mockup is here:

http://www.stonesoupsites.com/dnn/ubaru/OtherSkinSamples/WatercolorSkin.aspx

Yes, it is a free skin.

Is there any way to see our site with our actual content in that skin, without going live?

That would take a lot of work.  I can always put the skin on the site and if there’s a problem restore the old one.  That’s fairly easy to do.

OK, let's try it that way, then.

I have applied the skin.  Some page may need some adjustments for the new fonts. Take a look and see what you think.

I found a problem with the watercolor skin.  The image manager does not work well with this skin. So, unless people want to use html to edit pictures on the site, I suggest that we roll back to the previous skin.  I may be able to get into the nitty-gritty of the skin author’s code to fix the problem and reinstall it at a future time, but that will take some time. Meanwhile, we should roll back. Do you agree?

The site is back to its original skin.

What "image manager" is that?

In my experience it is usual for a web team to have a development site to try things out on. I am surprised that this isn't how you have been operating.

In any case, I am happy to "use html to edit", by which I suppose you mean, put image tags directly into the page source, for the time being. How hard would it be to set up a dev site?

I am now resolved to move to a new and open platform. It seems clear that the proprietary systems are far behind in flexibility.

Wow, be sure to be blunt, Michael.  Remember I am an unpaid volunteer.

Yes, of course, at HP we use development sites, but they have deep pockets there. UBarU doesn’t have the money to afford a development site as well as a production site.

The “image manager” is the tool used for a novice so that they don’t have to write html.  The problem is not with DNN, it is with the skin author.

Sigh. Sorry. In my corner of the world it doesn't cost anything to have a dev site.
