Brief History – UoPeople ACM Student Chapter
How time
flies? Around May 2014, UoPeople ACM
Student Chapter will be celebrating its first anniversary. Last year In the
early month of May 2013, Dr. Dan Taipala, ph.D – associate Dean of Computer Science
at UoPeople and Dr. Ariella Zeller, Ph.D – dean of Student Affairs
UoPeople, jointly informed us (CS
students) of the creation of a UoPeople ACM Stuent Chapter. Many of us welcomed
the idea and many as well showed interest during which a facebook page was
created by Dr. Taipala to enable us discuss and plan on developing the chapter.
In the short period that followed, interest died down and one of our fellow members, Joan Advincula created a google group which would later and up to date serve as the main forum for planning and discussing all chapter affairs. In the month of July 2013, chapter officials were appointed based on common initiative thinking. These officials were
- Joan Advincula – chapter chair
- Angela Lubianca C. – Secretary / Treasurer
- John Mboru – Vice chair / External affairs / Head of committee
- Rafael Victor - committee member
- Ateafac S. Forsong – web master
- Dr. Dan Taipala – Chapter sponsor
The period that followed was characterized by great enthusiasm and every official executed her/his functions actively. This led to the following developments:
- An action plan was drafted by the secretary and proposed to the chapter sponsor and he approved the plan. For more details on the plan, a copy of the plan is available and can be found in one of the threads in this forum.
- The action plan addressed many aspects of the chapter such as by-laws, chapter’s mission, fund raising strategy, activities, etc.
- A sketch of the chapter website was also drafted by Ateafac based on members’ opinion as a result of a survey conducted in the forum. A copy of the website can also be found in a thread in this forum.
- By this time, the chapter has registered a total of 11 members and a membership list is also available in this forum under the title “membership list.”
The period that followed after these developments was marked by no activity and right up to present, activities slowed down but the interest is there. We are hoping that the recent awarding of accreditation to our university will spark some renewed interest and the chapter will resume activities in a much more deterministic tone.
So, this is a rundown of the UoPeople ACLM Student chapter milestone.
- Ateafac S. Forsong
Nice work, Ateafac.
It just doesn't sound right that it's almost been a year and we haven't properly established ourselves yet.
In any case, I can only hope that we can add something good to that history sooner than later.
Best,

P.S. By the way, it's "Angela Labianca-Campbell".

Hi all,
The one sure way to attact members is activity. We've got to show them that we're doing something and then they'll want to come join us. I see people over Facebook looking for something to do and some also expecting something to do. I hope we can show them that.
