There is a large slate of new Telugu movies on Netflix in 2024, some of which have already been released on the streamer and others that are set to appear in the weeks and months after their theatrical releases. The Telugu language film industry is popularly known as Tollywood and it's an offshoot of Bollywood. While Bollywood may have a larger cultural footprint, the Telugu movie market actually surpassed the Hindi one in 2021 (via Business Today). Many still may have higher expectations for upcoming Bollywood movies in 2024, but Tollywood has its share of exciting releases.
With the incredible success of RRR, Tollywood movies have never been more poised to break out of the South Indian and South Asian markets and become, like RRR, international hits. Like Bollywood movies, Tollywood also features dance numbers, impossible physics, and plenty of delightful melodrama, but Telugu films have a greater focus on action and tend to cater to a pan-Indian audience rather than specifically a Hindi-speaking one. All this and the bevy of new Telugu language movies coming to Netflix in 2024 indicate Tollywood is here to stay.
Released theatrically on December 7, 2023, and appearing on Netflix less than a month later, Hi Nanna is a romantic drama directed by Shouryuv in his directorial debut. The film tells the story of a six-year-old with cystic fibrosis, Mahi (Kiara Khanna), who meets a mysterious but kind woman, Yashna (Mrunal Thakur). With Yashna's help, Mahi convinces her father Viraj (Nani) to tell the story of Mahi's mother, who disappeared years ago. What no one expects is just how critical Yashna ends up being to both this story and Mahi.
Hi Nanna has fantastic chemistry between its two leads and is a heartwarming tale that powers through some of the weaker moments of the story. The film earned over $1.5 million at the US box office (via Times of India), a milestone for the new filmmaker. It was also nominated for 15 awards and won in each category over three ceremonies: Behindwoods Gold Hall Of Famers Event 2023, Athens International Art Films Festival (March Edition), and Oniros Film Awards, New York (March Edition).
Guntur Kaaram follows the tumultuous life of Veera Venkata Ramana (Mahesh Babu), whose family is torn apart by political scheming and personal vendettas. Set in Guntur in 1998 and later in 2023, it explores the repercussions of a violent incident that lands Ramana's father, Satyam (Jayaram), in jail. As Ramana navigates a world of corruption and betrayal, he discovers shocking truths about his family and must fight to protect them. Released in theaters on January 12, 2024, Guntur Kaaram landed on Netflix on February 9, 2024.
The film only earned 172 crore at the worldwide box office, or $20.5 million US (via Pinkvilla), making it a box office bomb and the lowest return for any Mahesh Babu film since 2019. Guntur Kaaram does have many issues, including its plotting, music, and screenplay, but Babu is in top form, managing to carry the film alone and ensuring it's still an enjoyable watch.
Tillu Square, a romantic comedy-drama from Mallik Ram, is a sequel to the 2022 DJ Tillu, and it was released theatrically on March 29, 2024. Digital distribution rights were purchased by Netflix, but it's unknown when the film will appear on the streamer (via M9). Siddhu Jonnalagadda reprises his role as Bala Gangadhar Tilak aka "DJ Tillu", and this time around, DJ Tillu's love interest is Lilly Joseph (Anupama Parameswaran).
