Some of you may be familiar with the hit J-Dorama, One Liter of Tears, which accounts the life of a young girl, Aya Kito who suffered from spinocerabellar ataxia, a degenerative disease of the nervous system, and how she struggles daily to live her life to fullest to the very end till she passed away. A very heartwarming, yet heartbreaking story, as she accounts how her family cope with her disease and seeing them supporting her brightest daughter till the very end.
Aya Kito also wrote a diary accounting her personal life. Her diary was published by her mother and now i had the opportunity to read it in my own native language. Truly, anyone who have watched the drama series, would agree with me how blessed we are where our health is concerned. Looking back, it really made us realize the fragility of life and that some people can really find hope and comfort even in the grimmest of circumstances. Her positive outlook in life despite her condition would probably be why the majority who watched the series felt deeply touched by her courage.

theres no any possible cure found yet until they are able to find the chromosomes or genes or whatever it is which causes the disease and replace them with the healthy one though it is actually against the human moral. well i dont care anyway about the law or blablabla. they sooner or later must find the cure for this anyhow

That means oral reading fluency instruction should be partof the science of reading. And, vocabulary and morphology teaching, too. Thereare also a number of instructional approaches that have been found to boost readingcomprehension by teaching thinking strategies or enhancing written languageperformance (e.g., cohesion, sentence combining/reducing). And, guiding kids towrite about text is scientific, as well.
Any science of reading would concern itself with the amountof reading instruction provided and there are quality factors that need to beincluded. For instance, kids learn more when teachers provide clear purposesfor the lessons, when there is plenty of interaction among teachers andstudents, and when teachers explain themselves clearly. Those are justexamples, of course; there is even more.
When teaching the simple sound-symbol correspondences, teachers should make sure the kids can hear those sounds and distinguish themfrom other sounds; they should make sure kids can recognize these letterswithin words; they should make sure the kids can sound out unknown words oreven nonsense words using those correspondences; and they should be able toread and write words with those elements, too.
Although the numbers of phonics skills to be taught isusually pretty limited, the amount of phonics instruction kids should bereceiving is considerable. Experts usually recommend 20-30 minutes or so ofdaily phonics instruction in grades K-2 (in other words, about 200 hours ofsuch teaching). That means there is a need for thoroughness and depth; we wantmastery, not familiarization.
But she, if probed, may also honestly admit that she knowsnothing of the science of reading (in this case, the nature of theorthographic-phonemic aspects of the English language and the research oneffective decoding instruction).
Those who see their children guessing words and strugglingto read, grumble about the injustice of it all. They want more phonics. And, thereading community is as frustrated with those parents as the parents are withthem.
Thank you for this clear and truthful article. I am heartened by the growing number of people speaking about the broad scope of literacy and the need for direct instruction. I am always interested in the application of research in the classroom and welcome more information on all aspects of literacy.
Thank you, Dr. Shanahan, I see that you did not sign the letter, and I apologize for thinking you did. Your response to my comment is so on target and aligned to my beliefs. How do we make this unnecessary, and distracting, situation better? What can we do?
Our entire school district is just finishing year 2 of have a professional development based on the simple view of reading. At first, there were tears of frustration and guilt because we were teaching kids in ways that we now know are not affective. This work has been game changing for all of us, But most importantly game changing for the kids sitting in our seats now and for years to come.
Susan, the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessments levels A-D include words and spelling patterns not generally covered in a kindergarten classroom, so the only way students can be expected to "read" these words is by "looking at the picture and guessing". This guessing (what Ken Goodman called the psycholinguistic guessing game) is built into the F & P philosophy and a big step backward for districts using this assessment. At our district, our previous assessments that came as a result of the NRP findings asked kindergarteners to read text appropriate for an emergent reader. As you know, F & P is based on the work of Marie Clay, and Tim has already written about how the Three-Cueing System is not supported by the science of reading. And the beat goes on . . .
In addition to what teachers DO NOT learn in teacher preparation programs about the science of reading, teachers traditionally use the ELA curriculum adopted by their school district to teach literacy skills. This curriculum is often published by a "big box" publisher and while it represents all the Big 5 components from the NRP report, it frames this instruction through the lens of balanced literacy. How can we also influence these humongous publishers? When will they begin to publish material that is actually based on the science of teaching reading?
Is there any recent research on how literacy instruction is being taught to prospective teachers in universities? I am curious about courses offered and program requirements now for elementary education majors. I recall having one class in reading instruction back in 1998. That was not nearly sufficient, and is the reason why I pursued a masters degree in literacy. I hope the requirements have changed since then.
Just found this, so I don't know if anyone will see my question. In your "every child must have 30 minutes per day of explicit phonics instruction" what do you do with the children who are proficient readers by the time they reach Kindergarten? Why should they be forced to waste their time with years of explicit phonics instruction? Why should we treat them as if they had a learning disability that made it difficult for them to learn to read, when obviously they already know how to read, they have been reading books independently for several years, and they can probably read every book the teacher will introduce during the entire year, on the first day of class? These children are not rare. There are probably 4 or 5 proficient readers in every primary classroom. I don't see the point of ignoring the range of skills that exist in primary classrooms.
I completely agree with your article. The art of the knowledge of the science of reading is very important for teacher to learn to best instruct the children to gain confidence in their reading ability. The goal should be to have a child teach themselves to read better by learning to sound out words, decode them, recognize them. To be able to challenge themselves to learn to read by employing these method when no one is around at the time to read to them. Every aspect of the science of reading is very important and every educator, parent, grandparent and concern person should want to see if explored.
