Fish finders on your kayak???

I have used a Fish Finder on my motor boat for many years and mainly
to get the depth, water temp and to identify structure under the
water, but not really to find fish as such. Well using a Fish Finder
on your kayak provides all that but is much better at identifying fish
around your kayak. It is really great and certainly helps the angler
bring in more fish.

Just another tip is that due to the slower trolling speed of a kayak
compared to a motor boat you will have a higher success rate when
trolling dead baits correctly rigged over standard lures. The rigging
is critical in order to ensure the bait does not spin in the water.
Obviously live bait is even better overall but not always
available.Talk to me if you need to know more!

Cheers

Ivan

Hey Ivan

Did you make it up to Mussandam?

Was wondering which fish finder you use on your kayak? How does it attach etc?

Thanks

I'm using one that is totally portable, and the transducer is mounted using a suction cub mount (Garmin Fishfinder 90)

But the best portable one and very easy to use and setup is Hummingbird Fishin' Buddy (110, 120, or 140c)

Just curious guys...how much fish are you catching now that you have a fishfinder on your yaks? did it make much of a difference?

I'll have to say, it helps but not only to identify fish location, but you really need to know things like Water Temp, Depth, and Sea bed structure
And it totally depends on your fishing style, for trolling usually I follow the birds and bait fish, but when I do bottom fishing I use the fish finder.

Hi Ahmed

Did you manage to get yourself a kayak or are you still using the boat?

Kind Regards

Sonar is more useful than that. Used in manual mode, you can identify thermoclines and fish just above or below this when trolling or jigging.

Best entry level sonar is the Egle Barracuda at less than $80 on net

So...whats the point of knowing the water temp and depth and all that jazz when theres really no production to show? - sorry, not trying to be a dick here, i just want to understand why i should spend that money :D I'm a total noob when it comes to these things.

:) now I see where the question came from
When you do bottom fishing or jigging you don't usually need the surface activities, and temp tells you which spot you should head for, for example you cannot fish in a shallow water when it is water temp is very low or very high, and fishing around rock structure or even better underwater artificial structure (can be old boat, or as small as old car wheel.
Using similar techniques I've identified a nice spot, only 500 meters into the water, but it seems that there is some kind of underwater structure where you can see many different fishes moving around, the water there is like 6 meters deep so you can never identify such place without a sonar.

Ahmed
