The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute will host “For The Bible Tells Me So” on Saturday, April 21, in conjunction with Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South, the first art exhibition displayed on the walls of the Institute that focuses on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. The panel-led discussion will include excerpts from the film “Fish Out of Water,” a documentary on Bible-based condemnation of same-sex relationships and marriage inequality. The panel includes straight and gay clergy members with pastoral experience in gay-friendly faith communities. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a Q &A after the panel presentations. The program is developed for teens and adults. The event is free and open to the public. About Living in Limbo: Living in Limbo is a contemporary photography exhibit that honors the complexities of lesbian family life while revealing authentic moments shared by family members living in the Deep South. LIL focuses solely on lesbian families, a population that largely has been invisible and underrepresented in public arts. The exhibit’s powerful images and accompanying words challenge viewers to open their eyes, minds and hearts to lesbian families, and envision a world without prejudice and discrimination – a world that celebrates commitment, family and inclusion for everyone – a world without limbo. The exhibit opened March 30, 2012, at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and will close on June 11, 2012. The exhibit will travel to other museums and galleries nationwide.
