My name is Quang Do and I am currently an intern in the UAB Multicultural and Diversity Programs Office. We are very excited to announce the creation of a discussion series through UAB’s Free Food For Thought program entitled “Identity.”
This series is centered on the concept of personal identity. Through facilitated dialogue we will investigate race, racism, sexism, oppression, heterosexism, homophobia, classism and how they impact our ability to become change makers.
We will explore ways in which students can involve themselves in the UAB community to become up standers for creating an inclusive (anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic, anti-classist) learning space. To do this, we will provide students with an open space where they can collaboratively discuss and identify tools that can help them become a catalyst and activist for change.
What does this provide to your students?:
1. An opportunity for cross-cultural communication between all your students regardless of religion, race or sexual orientation.
2. An open space where students can build their public speaking and critical thinking capacity without fear of social judgment.
3. A to sharpen leadership skills by teaching students how to communicate in an environment with differing ideas than their own.
4. A platform for students to be a driving force for social justice by helping them identify the tools they need for activism.
5. Give students a chance to talk to and interact with one of the greatest social activists of our generation, Tim Wise.
If you think your students would benefit from this series Raphael Richard, the Coordinator of Multicultural and Diversity Programs at UAB, and I would be honored to come do a five-minute presentation on how to participate in this new “Identity” series at your organizations next meeting. Let us know of a good time for your student organization and we would be more than happy to be there.
The series will consist of three discussion events and one lecture. All events start at 6:00PM.
1. “Know Thy Self” Feb. 6 @ Edge of Chaos
2. “Unpacking our –ISMs” Feb. 21@ Edge of Chaos
3. “Involve to Evolve” March 6 @ Edge of Chaos
4. Concluding Lecture with, Tim Wise, on March 28. @Alumni Auditorium
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions/comments/concerns.
