As of this writing, SanDisk is not developing an update for the Windows 7 platform. SanDisk and Microsoft are collaborating on a U3 successor called StartKey ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StartKey ). ZDNet has an article on StartKey here ( http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1232 ).

However, Windows 7 should still support the U3 platform because the code base doesn't differ too much from that of Windows Vista. Minor app incompatibilities are still possible, however.

I would love to see U3 1.8 released, but I doubt SanDisk is devoting any time to it, despite releasing an updated Cruzer line that includes U3 functionality.

I second both of your suggestions for the LaunchPad.  I've been wanting the skin it since I got it. Metallic just isn't the same on a Windows PC; it belongs on Mac ;)

Hi everyone,

I was thinking: Windows Seven will be released on October 22 (almost two months) but I heard nothing about a U3 Smart Launchpad new version. Is U3 LLC or SanDisk working on Launchpad 1.8 in order to release a version compatible with Windows Seven?

Now, I would like to share with everybody a couple of ideas/suggestions that could be implemented in Launchpad 1.8. I invite everybody to share new ideas here and discuss them. Here are mine:
■ What about skins/themes on Launchpad 1.8? I mean, skins/themes on the Launchpad, downloadable from U3 Software Central. It could be so much funny and "liver" than just a gray Launchpad.
■ What about a changeable Launchpad's width & height? The current 433x528 pixels may not be 100% useful in 1440x900+ pixels monitors or even on mid-end laptops. People with 1920x1200 pixels LCD could resize the Launchpad to 450x1200 and more programs could be shown in the installed application list on the Launchpad.

Thank you very much!

I heard somewhere StartKey and ReadyBoost were originally tied together, but they both seem like poorly planned (and named) ideas that failed to take off (typical Microsoft "innovation").

I don't think SanDisk will abandon U3 any time soon; after all, they are still getting new developers to port software to the platform. In fact SFU3 will be working together with the official U3.com in the coming months.

I am planning on getting a 16GB U3 drive as well, in addition to a 64GB flash drive. The 64GB models are just $150 now in the US.

I second your suggestion for the maximized "Explore" window option.  That's bugged me for years.

If you are interested in developing or testing U3 apps, I invite you to join the SFU3 team :)

Hey, Josh!

I heard long time ago about the StartKey platform, but I never though this could actually kill U3 Smart. I mean, I never though Microsoft's StarKey could kill SanDisk's own U3 Smart platform. Seems like SanDisk was not that smart after all...

Will SanDisk leave all theirs U3 users around the world? I was thinking on get a 16 GB SanDisk Cruzer Titanium... I would better think twice this time... Today, Mr Kevin Anderson wrote about U3 technology itself but just a bit and nothing about StartKey. This is taking too much time to be released. It could be cancelled anytime. What would happen to us, the U3 users? There is no official voices talking here, just us.

Anyway, I have another cool suggestions for a possible Launchpad 1.8: adding an option at Settings menu to shift the window size when clicking on Explore drive X. I would like to open a maximized drive window every time I click on Explore drive X (when the X letter is actually the drive letter on your PC). It is a bit annoying to maximize manually the window everytime you click on Explore drive X button. Have this in mind, please.

Obviously, I would also love to have Launchpad 1.8 in my pocket. Who wouldn't?

I wish they continue supporting U3. U3 is not a dead platform, it has a lot of things to show.

Best regards,

Hi, Nathaniel. I had hoped we would be able to work together to provide U3 users with a better repository.

Nathaniel,

Will do. Right now we have a lot of apps and most of Web content in place, just need to test the U3 apps and choose a CMS for the site.
