Hello everybody,
Today I am bringing all of you a nice tweak for those who use Mozilla Firefox 3.x.x for U3.
If you use Mozilla Firefox 3.x.x for U3 and have got a big bookmarks collection, you may feel Mozilla Firefox is getting slower at start-up. This has to do with the bookmarks database system. Mozilla Firefox 3 and later use SQLite as database managing, so, after a time of being used, the SQLite files begin to fragment (as Windows files used too). The more fragmented are the SQLite files, the longer will take Firefox to get started.
If you have got too many add-ons enabled, it will cause a slow-down performance at start-up as well. My recommendation is to have installed up to twenty add-ons at most.
All right, about the SQLite files and the slow start-up, I will bring two great workarounds today.
■ The first workaround is a small piece of software called
IniFox. It is actually not a new program, but somewhat famous into the Latin American Firefox's fan users. IniFox uses the SQLite's VACUUM command in order to enhance the database files.
Before using IniFox, you have to open a Windows Explorer window, go to
Tools >
Folder Options > select the
View tab > under
Hide files and folders section, select the option
Show hidden files and folders > click on the
Apply button and then click on the
OK button (if necessary, also select
Display the contents of system folders and clear both checkboxes
Hide file extensions for known file types and
Hide protected operating system files). Do not play around with any previously hidden file/folder.
Now, run IniFox (the installer is in Spanish only, but it is really easy to install: click on the
Aceptar button (I Agree) at the first screen. Then you have to look for the proper path to get the Mozilla Firefox 3.x.x for U3's profile folder into your U3 flash drive, e.g.
H:\System\Apps\3C9F7B3F-D55C-42cd-8537-B878518B73AF\Data\profile (replace the
H letter for the correct unit letter where you have got your U3 smart flash drive connected). Inside the profile folder you will find several files with the
.sqlite extension. If you find them (you can see them by coping the folder location from IniFox and pasting it at the Windows Explorer address bar), that means you are into the correct folder. :)
Before clicking on the
Instalar (Install) button to start the installation process, be sure you are not using Mozilla Firefox for U3 at that moment. Okay, after clicking on that button, a DOS console will pop up. Press any key to start the IniFox enhancement process (or press on the x to cancel). It takes some seconds to be done, so please, be a little patient. :) When done, IniFox will ask you to press any key again to exit. All right, it is time to test how Mozilla Firefox for U3 works now... :)
Use IniFox once every three or four months for better results (you do not have to install it again, just go to the Mozilla Firefox's profile folder, look for the
iniFox_by_infospyware file and double click on it). Once it has been completed succesfully, you can hide again system's files and folders.
Please, have in mind this software is not official from Mozilla. It has been development by white hat hackers, so there is not any risk at all. Anyway, if you feel insecure about this, do not use it.
■ The other workaround is also old, but useful too. You do not have to install a thing. You only have to enter a code from
Tools >
Error Console. You will see a field called
Code. Okay, copy this code below (without quotes) and paste it into the
Code field:
"Components.classes["@mozilla.org/browser/nav-history-service;1"].getService(Components.interfaces.nsPIPlacesDatabase).DBConnection.executeSimpleSQL("VACUUM");" (it is just one line, remember you have to copy and paste this code, without the red quotes here).
Now, press the
Evaluate button to the right. Mozilla Firefox may hang for a couple of seconds (because it is optimizing the SQLite databases), so do not touch anything, just wait a few seconds, please.
And that is all.
This will be my last topic by now, because I am moving abroad and that is terrible to get FINALLY comfortable once you land at your new home sweet home. I will back in a couple of weeks.
In the meanwhile, I hope these workarounds work for you.
Best regards! Au revoir! :)
