In contrast to its four-show run at the United Center
last May, when U2 was starting to sound like a highly competent but
not particularly adventuresome junior version of the Rolling Stones,
the Irish quartet was in friskier mood in two encore concerts last
week.

Chris Martin and the other
members of Coldplay have made no bones over the years about their
admiration for U2. And the Irish band's guitarist, The Edge, told us
that the feeling is reciprocated: "I think you're talking about an
amazing talent there, that band as a whole and Chris as a singer and
songwriter. I don't think they sound that like us, but I,
occasionally I hear a little influence here and there, but it's
always something that I feel kind of proud about, that they enjoy
what we do and have done and they're making some amazing music."

even joining Pearl Jam on stage the day before a U2 concert in
Chicago, to stay in the city.

questions on world poverty and the U.N. summit meeting.
Q.
1. I am the adoptive mother of a West African-born child with AIDS.
Our family is often asked what the average American can do to make a
difference, even the smallest dent, in the fight to control and
treat AIDS in Africa. Which organizations in addition to DATA do you
point people toward? Which agencies big and small are making the
most difference on the ground?
Whenever we listen to U2, my
daughter never fails to say, "I like this man's big voice, and Mom,
he fights for Africa!" Heartfelt thanks for your boundless and
tireless generosity and evangelization for all Africans! - A

ad-libbing the opening of the song Vertigo as the Irish rockers

But despite energetically launching
the concert -- the first of four sold-out dates at the ACC -- with a
song off their latest album, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, the
Dublin band wasted no time returning to the very beginning.
