The United States women's national soccer team will face Australia, Germany and either Morocco or Zambia in Group B at the 2024 Paris Olympics, FIFA confirmed Wednesday during the tournament draw at the Pulse Building near Paris.
The tournament will mark the Americans' first competitive games with incoming head coach Emma Hayes at the helm. She takes over the team following its worst finish in World Cup history last year, when the U.S. was eliminated by Sweden in the round of 16.
"We'll start working on specific game plans and things like that, but also just to know the logistical path [helps]. There's so much that goes into an Olympics with such a short turnaround and congested games. For our administration to be able to start mapping that out and take bigger steps towards where we're headed is really, really important and exciting."
The Americans won four of the first five Olympics to feature women's soccer, but they are in search of their first gold medal since the 2012 London Games. They earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
The U.S. recently fell to No. 4 in FIFA's rankings, its worst position since the rankings launched in 2003. But the Americans were one of three seeded teams for the tournament alongside World Cup champion Spain and host France. England, the No. 2 team in the world, failed to qualify (as Great Britain) for the Olympics.
The U.S. holds a 23-5-7 record against Germany. The two teams have combined to win six of the nine Women's World Cup titles. They have previously met only once in Olympic play, a 2004 semifinal that the U.S. won 2-1 in extra time behind a goal from Heather O'Reilly.
Australia has defeated the U.S. only once in 34 meetings. The teams played to a scoreless draw in the group stage of the previous Olympics and met again in the bronze-medal game, which the U.S. won 4-3.
Kilgore was pleased with landing in Group B for the "right type of travel" between Nice and Marseille. She said she will meet in person with Hayes on Thursday to further discuss the draw and future plans. Kilgore has been in charge of the U.S. squad as interim coach since Vlatko Andonovski resigned following the team's 2023 World Cup exit.
"We're not just looking at the group games," Kilgore said. "The idea is that you prepare to move beyond the group games, and the idea is to select the best group of players that will work the best together to accomplish a variety of different tactical tasks."
Defending Olympic women's champion Canada will face Colombia, New Zealand and host France in Group A of the women's tournament. Spain will play in Group C alongside Japan, Brazil and the winner of April's Nigeria-South Africa playoff.
The men's Olympic draw also took place on Wednesday, with the U.S. men set to compete at the Olympics this summer for the first time since 2008 after failing to qualify for the previous three editions.
They American men were drawn in Group A alongside host France, New Zealand and the winner of a playoff between Guinea, the fourth-place team from African qualification, and the fourth-place team from Asian qualifying.
"And the second thing [is] the commitment that players have is also something that is very appreciated from the whole staff. And then the excitement actually that we have to go to the Olympic Games and the positive vibes that make us, I would say, confident. But also, I believe we're going to be ready for the challenges ahead of us in the Olympic Games."
Firstly, find the middle of the page, and mark a dot 14 cm from the bottom. Then set your compass to 9 cm wide, which will give our ball a diameter of 18 cm. Place the spike end of the compass on the marked dot, and draw the circle.
Now, we're going to draw the hexagons and pentagons on the soccer ball. It doesn't matter if you get it wrong, just draw lightly at first so it's easy to rub out, then when you're happy with what you've got press harder. Start by drawing 2 pentagons, almost symmetrical. Add a chopped off part of a pentagon at the top, and a pentagon at the bottom. *IMPORTANT* Make sure to curve some of the lines slightly, to replicate the curve of a real ball, making it more 3D.
Connect the lines from the pentagons, to form hexagons. Continue to make hexagons and make sure that each pentagon is surrounded by hexagons, before drawing another pentagon. This step can be a little tricky, and so if you get stuck, use the template. You should be able to save, and print off the template which you can use to help you draw it.
This step is essential, this really makes it look 3D when it's finished. Use the pictures or template as a guide and mark some areas with the Artline 400 to NOT shade, until right near the end. Then go over the pencil lines with the Artline to really define the shapes.
For this step we're going to only use the Sharpie, with it color in all the pentagons. Making sure to NOT color in the areas you marked (middle right picture). You might need to go over the pentagons twice to make sure you get a solid black.
This step is personal, you can pick your favorite team to draw on the ball. I chose F.C Barcelona to draw on my soccer ball. I drew the outline with the Artline marker, and then did the details inside.
This is a very important step, as it makes your soccer ball much more realistic and 3D. Start by marking off a few spots on the hexagons to keep lighter, this will add to the 3D effect. Next, lightly shade the light areas in the black pentagons, then smudge the shading with a tissue or your finger. Go over the whole soccer ball lightly, EXCEPT the middle top hex (the hexagon with the team logo in it). When shading darker areas go over lightly, then press a little harder and repeat until you get the desired tone. Shading multiple layers not only gives you the option to rub out areas to alter, but fills in the area better and gives smoother coverage. Keep doing layered shading until you're happy with the result, but make sure to keep the hexes near the top, lighter than the ones near the bottom.
To shade the shadow, draw an oval like shape underneath the the ball. You want to draw the shadow almost to the edge of each side, and have the top of the shadow about 1 cm away from the bottom of the ball. When you're happy with the shape of the shadow, press harder to darken the shadow. Pretend you have a slightly smaller oval inside the shadow, and leave near the edges a little lighter to give the effect of it levitating. Once you're done with the shadow, use your ruler to mark a straight line just underneath the widest part of the soccer ball. Next, cut across the line, and around the top of the ball. This trick will make the ball seem as though it's hovering above the page.
Lastly, rub around the ball to make really contrast the ball from the white background. Also, I found that after shading with the pencils, some graphite found its way onto my black pentagons. So to fix this I just went over my pentagons with the sharpie again.
Now, you're done! You can try out all different angles and see what angle your 3D soccer ball drawing works best. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, if you have any questions about techniques i used, or just some tips, comment and i will try to get back to you. If you do draw this make sure to click the "I Made It" button to let me know, and post a picture of your drawing in the comments.
Some records suggest that around 25% of the soccer matches in the UEFA Champions League or the FA Cup end in a draw. However, the percentage can vary depending on the team and the nature of the league or tournament.
As per the rules of soccer, a team earns three points for a win, one for a draw, and zero for a loss. The same rules are followed in all group-stage matches of the World Cup and teams advance to the next stage on the basis of points earned.
However, too many draws and fewer wins can also cause a team to be included in the relegation zone. In this case, they end up at the bottom of the points table and are included in a lower division for the next season.
That means any addition of extra playing time to every match will increase the stress on the players and make them more prone to injuries. The players might get exhausted in the early stage of a tournament or in the qualifying matches.
However, once the teams are in the knockout stages of a tournament, a clear winner is decided for every soccer game. So after the standard length of a soccer game, the teams play 30 minutes of extra time. If the scores remain tied, a penalty shootout takes place.
Things get complicated in the World Cup group stage or major league soccer when two teams end up with the same number of points. For the World Cup, a series of tie breakers are used to determine the team positions as per FIFA rules of soccer.
Firstly, the goal difference (all the goals scored by a team across their matches minus all of their goals conceded) is considered. In the case of a tie, just the number of goals scored is considered.
Any player wanting to win a soccer game needs to focus on improving their skills with regular practice. And no matter whether you are practicing on a soccer pitch or a DIY backyard soccer field, the Open Goaaal 3-in-1 Soccer Trainer and Rebounder is one of the best soccer training equipment you can buy.
Every once in a while I have to be reminded that not everyone understands soccer. And oftentimes I find myself teaching people about the laws of the game. It is, after all, to them a foreign sport, a growing one at that.
As a soccer fan, a draw seems such a natural part of the game. I enjoy draws because they often represent a fair result of what happened on the pitch during the 90 minutes. Why penalize one team over another if both teams were equally as good (or bad) for the entire game?
