showing sql in the browser

I have been working my way through the Typo3 tutorials and the last
one I came across is
'rendering the category title'

In the video it shows the sql script being shown in the browser using

debug(array($query))

Which then shows the sql in the browser. Can I get this to work? No
way!

I have been having a look around and it suggests I may need to change
a few files locally in
order to start seeing the sql script in my browser. This is not
mentioned in the video. I came
across about three potential alterations but none of them seemed to
make a difference.

Any ideas? I'm using typo3 winstaller 4.2.3
