Immersion is the third studio album by Australian band Pendulum. The album was announced in early 2009, with the name being confirmed in December 2009.[1] The album was released on 21 May 2010 in Australia and Ireland, and on 24 May for the rest of the world,[2] followed by a UK tour of the album. In January 2010, Pendulum hosted the album preview Ear Storm event at Matter in London in which many top DJs performed sets of their own with Pendulum being the headliners.[3]
Immersion peaked at number one on the UK Albums Chart in its first week of release.[5] The album features a variety of sounds. Although drum and bass is highly featured, electro, house and metal styles are also within the 67-minute long album.
The track "Ransom" was originally included in the album but it was later dropped as it "didn't fit the sound of the album". The band later stated that "Ransom will be either released as a free download to fans or a B-side but it will definitely see the light of day".[4] Rob Swire later stated that "Ransom" won't be released because he found the song to be "boring" after the intro; however, he added that most of the project files for the song were corrupted when his MacBook hard drive malfunctioned.[14][15][16] However, on 6 April 2011, "Ransom" was released as a download-only single on the group's website in aid of Japan's earthquake appeal, and it entered the UK Singles Chart at number 193 the following week.[17]
In my opinion, I think Immersion the best Pendulum album. I've held it dear to me for years. Why do I love it so much? I love every song on the album, but my passion for it is deeper than that. I think the track-list orders itself into a story. I'll explain. Genesis, is really just an intro song, but really starts out at Salt in the Wounds. Salt in the Wounds starts the album with an upbeat and rave-like setting. Going into more detail, Watercolour intensifies the struggle of a man having suicidal thoughts of a conflict soon to be explained. Set Me On Fire, could possibly be a the man having a hallucination of suicide. Crush, is setting up the distress of the man re-thinking of the "killer" that killed "her" in Witchcraft, so lets pick up the story at Witchcraft. Witchcraft explains how (whoever "she" is), dies, (by a murderer.) But, starts out the song possibly by the man looking at the killed woman. By the lyrics," It's in your eyes, a color fade out, looks like a new transition..." Self Vs. Self is about the man fighting his inner-demons on whether or not he should kill the girl discussed in the album. The Fountain discusses the build up of him wanting to kill her, and finally does it. Supported by, "Behind my eyes, is rage alone, but you don't understand, it was all home-grown..." And by, "All these fears, and all this love, all you've given me, is not enough..." Then finally, Encoder. This song really hits the feels. In Encoder, the man finally realizes that he loved her and sees the only way that he can find her again, is by taking his own life, to join her in the after-life. The album is a bittersweet story to me. I know I probably didn't explain everything clearly, but the beginning of the album hides that the man described in the album is really the murderer of the woman described as well, not by a random person. Sorry for the long post, I just felt that I needed to describe what I felt about Immersion.
A week ago I listened to immersion, for me it's a very confusing album, as seems the band were trying to find a new direction, it works in tracks like Encoder, which is a tropical paradise to me, the Groove for some reason reminds me of Fake Happy by Paramore. Apart from that I found highlights few and far between, but I have to admit knowing watercolour and witchcraft, I wasn't expecting Crush and the island to go that hard ! ....
