Afactory reset, sometimes called a hard reset or a master reset, will remove all personal information, changes, and data from your device, returning it to the same settings and data that it had when it left the factory.
Please save any information you need before the factory reset because your personal information may not be recovered. If you have encrypted the microSD card, you must decrypt it before resetting the device. Otherwise, your device will not be able to read the data on the card. From Settings, search for and select Decrypt SD card, and then follow the on-screen prompts.
Are you sending your Galaxy phone or tablet in for repair, or giving it to a friend or family member? If you need to wipe your device's data for any reason, you can perform a factory reset. This feature will completely erase your personal information and data to make your phone or tablet a clean slate. You can also reset the general, network, and accessibility settings without erasing apps or data.
You can reset your phone or tablet to its default settings without erasing apps or data. This type of reset will not erase security or language settings, accounts, personal data, or settings for your downloaded apps.

If you have encrypted the microSD card, you must decrypt it before resetting the device. Otherwise, your device will not be able to read the data on the card. I bought an A7 back in September to use in my store. It didn't do what I wanted it to do exactly so I decided to just keep it for myself. Had a bunch of stuff to do around the holidays so I didn't get to mess with it until now. I charged it up and turned it on and it wont take my password. I tried many many times and nothing worked and it also never gave me an option to reset it. I tried to reset it on the find my device app but it wouldn't do it there either. It said find my device was not turned on even though I turned it on when I set it up. After searching I found an article that said I could factory reset it by holding the power and volume down button then switching to power and volume up button when the device went off. This doesn't work either. It never makes it to the reset menu. I've watched a thousand youtubes and read a thousand articles and nothing works. I've called support twice now and was told it must be a software problem, but I cant send it in to be repaired because it has to be reset before I send it in. so... Do I just have a $200 paperweight now?
I finally found a solution that works to factory reset the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 SM-T500. This is the device that will not work with the typical method which is to power off the tablet, then hold down volume up and power until the Android recovery screen comes on.
For the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 SM-T500 do this:
1. Connect the tablet to a Windows PC with a USB cable while the PC and tablet are powered on
2. Hold the Volume Down and Power buttons until the tablet powers off and you hear the disconnected device sound on the PC
3. Then let go of the volume down and then hold volume up while continuing to hold power
4. The Android Recovery screen load
5. Let go of the buttons
6. Press volume down multiple times to highlight Wipe data/factory reset
7. Then press the power button to select
The "the device restore screen" never appears. That's the whole problem. I've tried it over and over and over. I've even let the tablet's battery completely drain and the device turn off then recharged it and try again (twice) and it still doesn't work.
I just met same issue. When the airplane I took almost arrived at U.S, I found android logo with erase data message automatically shown on my s9+ then the phone went into factory reset protection mode need wifi to verify but hotel wifi and other wifi can not pass verification with no reason. The phone just can not be used in my whole trip. After I backed from trip to home, I can only use home wifi to verify but factory reset was already done. This issue ruined whole trip. Still worry about next trip will automatically factory reset again.
@Steve1956: On your Galaxy A21s, please swipe up from your Home Screen > Settings > Tap your profile at the top of the list of settings > Profile info > Email > Change, then enter an active email address that you can use to receive the verification emails. You could also select Security and privacy > Two-step verification, and disable this feature if you continue to have trouble with this process.
What I did to bypass it was as follows:
I went to samsung website to access my samsung account from there
Since I didnt have the access to the old email I used the qr code to sign in
Open the QR code option from the dropdown in your samsung phone and use it scan
Now you should be inside your samsung account in your pc
Navigate to Devices > Under signed in devices you will find your device with the model name
Press sign out > now check your phone in settings > accounts and you will see that you are signed out.
Now factory reset and voila it works.. Job done
Hi All, My Samsung Galaxy got slow so I decided to do a hard factory reset, after that I could not log in to my phone. Going thru the setup steps 1st language, 2nd WiFi, 3rd Samsung Account login.I was hoping a factory reset will resolve the issue has in turn stopped me logging in to the Samsung account from the device ('processing failed') . I can log on to the Samsung account from another device. Samsung call center have so far have been unable to help. I actually have 2 old Samsung Galaxy that I am using as paper weight because of not able to login into my Samsung account on the phone, thanks to Samsung for their latest update. I did reset the device again and change the password on the account I even created another account with no luck. Any advice please?! I'd love to recover my Samsung device's back and get them back in good use again.
Hi, Thanks for your response, As I mentioned the phone is stuck at the Samsung account login and I cant go further in to check the device setting and software, it look like Samsung did something to there software that no matter which device you have of there products it will have the same problem ( from all the search on the web) if you decide to factory reset it. also I didn't understand the part when connecting the phone to the PC is there a certain software to use like iTunes with iPhone or what is the purpose of connecting the phone to the computer?
Hi, I was hoping it will help but it didn't have a solution for my phones problem" factory resetting the device and getting stuck on the Samsung account screen (Samsung factory reset protection kicked-in).
One of my phone is Galaxy S5 which I use as a media player and as a stud finder, I did the cache clear but it didn't help, and connecting it to Smart Switch didn't help also because the phone is not fully booted it is at the 3rd step of setup and is stuck there.
So I stupidly set up a pattern lock on my old phone and even though I know the pattern it won't unlock my phone. The phone died because I bought a new phone so haven't been using it, and the only way to unlock the phone is with the pattern that won't work. I tried doing a factory reset by holding down the volume up and home button, and then holding down the power (so holding all buttons at same time) but nothing happens. Any ideas? Thanks in advance
In addition, as AndrewL said, if you have a Google or Samsung account logged into your phone, you can also use it to factory reset your phone remotely from the web. Here is a more detailed tutorial that should help: -reset-samsung-phone-that-is-locked.html.
Hello guys! I own a Samsung Smart TV UE4EMU6172U, and after using for some time, I made the decision to factory reset it. The problem is that I forgot the PIN and I can't follow the guides on internet as I have a slightly different remote (image attached with my remote). Please help a man in need. Thanks in advance!
Hi @Dunkelheit, did you set your own pin originally? if not the default is 0000, but if you changed it then another matter. I also have that smart remote but also a standard one , think easier to reset with the standard one . You could try with a Samsung remote app on mobile though and use standard instruction of ,Mute>8>2>4>Power Reset Pin some info for Smart Remote here though -pin-code-samsung-smart-tv/ To change pin go General settings-System Manager on more modern models.
I have tried to reset the pin following the instructions on a smart remote as well as on the app, I have tried different speed but it never works. I am rather sure is not about how fast do I do it, I have been very quick many times. Any idea how to fix this?
