Hi folks,

After participating in the NASA Sample Return Robot with my Mystic rovers I have decided to change my software base. The rovers current use C++ code and a vision package, RoboRealm, running on Windows XP.

I want to at least explore using Linux, the Robot Operating System, and OpenCV (for vision). The problem is I have never, despite 4 decades on various operating systems, gotten into Linux. I have tried but always give up after a few weeks.

Would anyone be willing to mentor me through getting Linux up and running?

What web sites or forums are good for asking questions, especially if for an experienced developer who just does not know Linux?

What version of Linux would be good for development and running on the robots?

The robots are ITX PCs, 4 core 2.14ghz, 4 gig ram, and SSD so there is no limitations due to hardware. Since Linux is already a challenge I probably do not want to run different versions.

I am familiar with Eclipse CDT. I have a year old version of LUbuntu on a system . I got Eclipse Juno CDT installed but getting it on the start menu has eluded me. (The package installer only knows about Indigo.) That is typical of what I run into when I try Linux. It gets about 90-95% to where I want and the rest drives me nuts.

I tried Ubuntu last year but the desktop looking like a giant smartphone turned me totally off. A friend suggested LUbuntu so I tried it.

Rud,

My senior design project a few years ago was built on Player/Stage, the forerunner to R.O.S.

I'd suggest running a stock Debian or close derivative--Crunchbang or something similarly lightweight. Eclipse or Code::Blocks is acceptable for development.

I'd be happy to help you get this all set up--shoot me an email and we can take it from there.

I want to throw my vote behind Linux as opposed to Windows for your application.
I've used both in various industrial control applications and it's no contest.

I'm not in a position to recommend a distro because I haven't
tried enough of them but I've used Debian for some robot applications
and found it to be easy to apply.
