With the Coordinating Board moving towards a reduction in core hours we are faced with the process of defending keeping our one hour activity course as part of our local core requirement for graduation. Please let me know if you still have a requirement in your programs. Thanks, Rich

Ours was recently removed though there are some programs on campus that still have an activity class as a part of their degree. We will see how long that continues.

Texas State has two Physical Fitness/Wellness required for GE. We are, however, facing the same university GE war to reduce our GE hours somewhat.

Yes, we have a two credit hour requirement. We work very closely with the dean of university studies to offer courses that students need and want. Not offering the on-line activity instruction opened a discussion about whether or not we should be in the core. We quickly created one course just to accommodate our students who are in on-line programs and faculty are discussing offering a couple more in the next year or two for traditional students. We won that argument and are still in the core.

Nope. We were replaced in the gen ed with Global Learning. Then we created a course called Sport in the Global Society and it has become one of the most popular course in that portion of the Gen Ed. J

This course is a great idea. I’m happy our students are being physically active, and I’ll keep fighting for that, but this is a great alternative and much easier to manage.

We are just starting a nursing program here and the coordinator of that program recently approached me about counting nutrition for physical activity courses. . . I’m holding my ground. I’m afraid to set a precedent.
