Subject: Question about KINE Programs

Good Morning!

As some of you may know, I have been appointed the new Department Chair at Tarleton State University.    Dr. Steve Crews served as Chair for 13 years and decided that he wanted to pursue retirement activities (mainly, golfJ).

As the new Chair, I have a few questions about your programs ---

·         Activity Classes – Concerning semester credit hours (SCH), are the activity classes listed as 1-hour or 2-hour?

·         Has your school adopted the Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS)?

·         Do you have a Sports Officiating class?   If so, is it a 2-hour or 3-hour class?

Thanks for helping out the New Kid on the Block!!!!    (I’m sure there is a song in there somewhereJ)

All the best,

Kayla

Except for SCUBA IV (Divemaster training and certification), all of our activity classes are 1-hr courses. We have 1 officiating class... PHED 1309 - Officiating Football. And yes, we have adopted the TCCNS...

CONGRATS!!

·         Activity Classes – Concerning semester credit hours (SCH), are the activity classes listed as 1-hour or 2-hour?

1 credit hour for the student, 2 credit hours for the instructor, 3 contact hours/week

·         Has your school adopted the Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS)?

Our gen ed departments have, for the most part. Our department has not, for the most part.

·         Do you have a Sports Officiating class?   If so, is it a 2-hour or 3-hour class?

Intramurals and Officiating (but it is all officiating) = EDKN 1308, 3 cr hrs…..but anytime we are looking for hours to put somewhere else, this is always the first course that we consider changing to a 2 or 1 cr hr course.

Most of our activity courses are one-hour.  We have some two-hour courses that are still in the directory, but we haven’t used them in years.  When we had to parry down the hours to meet the 120 rule we had to make a lot of changes.  Two of those were designed to meet the sport specific types of questions on the TExES for our teaching majors.  So, instead of teaching a bunch of one-hour activity courses for our majors to take we created a Individual/Dual/Lifetime Sports class where they learn multiple sports; and a Non-Traditional Team Sport class to hit those team sports most of our majors know very little about.  Both of those are one-hour courses.

Like Dr. Hearon at Kingsville our core courses and programs have adopted that system, but we have not.

Also, like Kingsville, we have a Sport Officiating class that is a three-hour class.  It used to be on our teaching plan, but we took it off to make room for other things that we felt were more important.  It is still on our Sport Management plan, but listed as an either/or with Outdoor Adventure.

Hope that helps Kayla!

OH!  Tell Steve Randy said ‘hello’!  We went to school together at A&M!  He was a MUCH better student, but I am a MUCH better golfer!!!  LOL  Steve will love that!

Activity classes one hour credit, two hours contact.

Like A&M CC and Kingsville no on TCCN in department though I use it sometimes to determine similarity of classes.

Our officiating class like many others,  “bit the dust” during the 120 hour requirement time period.

And to Randy B., I am not sure I was a better student but you were certainly a much better golfer.  I play two or three times a year

in charity scrambles and that is about the extent of my golfing escapades at this time.

Congratulations Kayla.  The joy and happiness you are about to endure is indescribable!

We follow the TCCNS.  All our activity classes are 1-hour.  We don’t have an officiating class but may consider a 3-hour version in the future.  I hope this helps.  Please let us be of assistance with any other questions you may have.

Thanks Darla. Retirement has been tough. I can't decide whether to paddleboard when I get up or wait until after breakfast. Of course there is twice weekly softball practice (Tues/Th), with double header games on Saturdays. Wednesday night is basketball league. Thursday afternoon as well as Sunday afternoon is Pickleball. I have to find time to SCUBA. I expect I'll be the healthiest person in the cemetary when I get there.

My mind is writing checks that my body can't cash. Otherwise, retirement in Hawaii has been everything I dreamed it would be.
