Good Afternoon,

As A&M Texarkana explores the possibility of moving toward a kinesiology program, I would appreciate any feedback you could give with regard to enrollment numbers/percentages.  Specifically:

1) Where does your department rank on campus in terms of number of overall majors? Any breakdown in terms of specific program areas is appreciated by not necessary.
2) What percentage of athletes are declared as majors in your programs?

If you think of other pertinent information related to this type of data, please feel free to include.  Thanks for your time!

1.       We are the largest major on campus. Right now it probably looks like this: 35% ec-12 pe, 45% exercise science (includes ex sci, pre-pt, and performance psychology), 10% sport & leisure, 10% sport business.  550-600 majors total.

2.      Hmm, the last time we checked I think it was around 33% of athletes are declared majors in our department.  100ish out of 300ish.

Greetings  Sonia,

Kin makes up about just under 10%. Roughly 600 -650 of 6800 total enrollment. About 250-300 minors.  Most majors are exercise science – PT,OT, DC, PA, cardiac rehab,  wannabes 500 or so.  Some general kinesiology 150+ or -.  We did away with EC-12 two years ago with the marketability issue in smaller public schools.  About 15% of the athletes are KIN majors but about another 7% are minors.

Sonia,

We are the third largest undergraduate program on campus around 700 students.

Also, though we do have athletes in the major they probably make up less than 5% of our population of majors.

We are the second largest program on campus, with 1065 majors and approximately 200 second majors and/or minors. We don't have a breakdown in terms of % of athletes, but I am fairly confident more student-athletes major in Criminal Justice than in KIN. By far our most rapidly growing program is in the Fitness and Human Performance area, as opposed to teaching. We have approximately 175 Health Science majors, 60-70 dance, and 70 graduate students.

We have approximately 160 KINE majors out of 900 students. I don't know exactly how many are athletes, but it feels like a lot.

We offer three degree concentrations: Physical Education (for those wanting to teach), Exercise Science (for those pursuing PT/OT), and Human Performance (a general degree with 21 hours of electives). In addition, we are just in the beginning phases of developing an Athletic Training curriculum. Many students come to HT planning to "coach," which puts them on the Physical Education degree. However an increasing number are pursuing Exercise Science for physical therapy or Human Performance for personal training. We still have too many students who switch off of Physical Education to Human Performance because they just want to graduate and don't want to stick around for student teaching. Those students tend to eventually come back and enroll in our ATCP program.

Hope this helps.

Texas State has over 1300 ESS majors in four programs. This makes us one of the largest majors on campus behind business and elementary education. I have no idea on the percentage of majors that are athletes, but our tracks are:

PrePT 950

PETE 181

Health & Fitness Management 104

ESS Clin Populations 97

We also have AT, Health Education, and Recreation.

Sonia:
Texas Lutheran University is a small private university with an overall enrollment around 1300. The kinesiology department is the second largest department on campus with an enrollment of about 220 majors, five faculty, and several adjuncts. Athletes make up about 32% of overall students on campus and the kinesiology department contains about 38%. We could have a greater percentage but our program is fairly rigorous in the biological sciences and some choose other majors.

There are several specialty areas, and students interested in physical therapy (~33%) can choose kinesiology or biology and end up with similar transcripts upon completion. We have a nationally accredited athletic training program with about 25 students, fitness and sport management specialization (~40 students), exercise science specialization (~30 students), teaching/coaching certification specialization (~20 students), and kinesiology specialist specialization (a flexible degree plan with about 60 students). About 33% of our majors end up working in areas only related to kinesiology such as law enforcement, military, etc. Lately it has become more difficult to find teaching/coaching jobs with alternate (post-bac) certification and this practice needs to be watched closely in my opinion.

Best of luck with your program and feel free to contact me if a longer discussion is necessary. Merry Christmas!
