I picked up the newest Texas Monthly (October, 1999), the one with the
Cheerleader on it. My reason? A mention of the high school football team from
Kimmy's school.
However, when I get it home and start looking I find on page 196 a story called
"Witch Hunt" by John Ratliff with pictures of Marcy and some of her covenmates
on it.
So far it looks like a good article athough I have to admit that I haven't read
all of it yet (I've owned it for all of about 5 minutes and rushed home to post
this). It does quote Harvey (our favorite minister) and George W. Bush (who, to
my knowledge has yet to back down from his statement about witches).
Three pages, one picture.

Would you mind scanning the headline of the story, the pict, and as
much of the article as your willing to and either sending to my email,
or posting it here??? I was in that counter-protest, and would like
the article to put in the kindred scrapbook.
If you want to email it, please send it to mailto:vit...@irminsway.org

Before you buy.
Same here! I wasn't in the counter-march but I am trying to gather up all of
the articles and pics I can of what's been going on. I'd really appreciate a
mailed copy (as I think this group frowns upon binary posts).

I bought a copy of Texas Monthly just to read this, and it's not too bad, not
too good, either. It does not cover the Labor Day rally at all. I would bet
their deadline was well before that. One thing that did bother me was the
reporter's rather dismissive description of Wiccan beliefs:
"Aside from their basic credo ("An ye harm none, do what you will") and a few
other tenets, there's not much in the way of a canon. If you were to cobble
together a religion from every third book on the New Age shelf at Borders, you
might wind up with Wicca, which is liberally laced with elements of witchcraft,
nature worship, and Celtic and Norse mythology, among other things. Despite
this eclecticism--maybe because of it--it's one of the fastest-growing
religions in the country, even though witches say they don't actively seek
converts."
It sounds to me like he relied only what he may have been told, and didn't
really do much research to learn any more. He also manages to make the ritual
he attended sound rather flimsy and silly: "the amateur-theatrical quality of
the event" and "the let's-put-on-a-show aesthetic." Plus more.
The article's saving grace is that Rev Harvey comes off looking like the
fire-breathing bigot he is. The writer's facts are correct as far as I know
from other reports, and it's a pretty fair (as in good, fair, poor)
presentation of the events and the issues. I just don't care much for his tone.
I'll carp on one final thing: there is only one pull-quote and it says, "Among
the many accusations made against the Wiccans are that they kidnap and kill
(and possibly eat) small children, that they're possessed by demons, and that
they're pacifists." The article makes clear this is only Harvey's opinion and
goes on to present the other side, but anybody who only read that call-out
would get a misleading impression. It'll grab the reader, but it's bad editing,
in my opinion.

Buckle up. It makes it harder for the aliens to suck you out of your car.
It need not cover the rally itself. I'm collecting anything and everything
having to do with folks trying to cause trouble for Pagans. A sort of "mug
shots r us" project I'm working on. Trying to make record of groups and
people who are definitely not bosom buddies of the Pagan community (like
dear ol' Bob Barr and his buddy Bush Jr.). I'm also working up lists of
non-Pagan groups which are supportive to Pagans (like the ACLU and Universal
Life Church). I think it might help Pagans to know who they can trust and
who to discount out of hand (and, well, who OT to vote for *grin*). And I
like knowing such things, too, so it's as much for my own education as for
helping other people be aware.

:-/.... Sounds rather like someone sent out a cynic on a story he really
didn't want to do to me. I can't say as I agree with that tone of his
either. Somehow I doubt if he was sent out on a Muslim or Hindu event that
his commentary would be quite so scathing....

The woes of modern journalism. Drag your audience in with something almost
trashy if the material in the article may not be deemed the best in the
world or isn't of general interest...... Agreed, poor tactics, but very
common these days unfortunately.

Hee-hee! I just LOVE your tag-line :-D

Sounds more like a deliberate sensationalizing eye grabbage yellow
journalism tactic. But I am a tad cynical....... ;] PS, I love your sig!
