Sex Education: Texas' focus on abstinence isn't working

November 11, 2007

Erandy Gonzalez is a straight-A student from Oak Cliff.
The 17-year-old also is pregnant with her second child.

While Erandy has excelled in school, she has a limited
understanding of where a teenager might find birth control.
That, it seems, is the Texas way.

State law requires public schools to present abstinence as
"the preferred option" in sex education classes, which could
more aptly be described as don't-have-sex education classes.
Oftentimes, little attention is devoted to contraception –
if it's mentioned at all. Teaching abstinence as the first-
and-only option is an excellent idea – in theory. But in
practice, it's not working.

A pair of new reports provides a one-two punch to the heart
of Texas' approach to sex education. The first revealed that
our state tops the list for teens having babies. Texas also
ranks No. 1 among states for teens who have given birth multiple
times. Another study revealed last week that abstinence-only
instruction does little, if anything, to stop teen sex. Urging
abstinence while providing detailed information about contraception
has been a more effective approach, the nonpartisan study found.

For additional evidence, Texas should look west, to California.

Both states face unique challenges posed by burgeoning immigrant
populations. Hispanics have the highest teen birth rate of any
ethnic group. But while Texas leads the nation in teens having
babies, California has seen its numbers plummet.

Texas has focused on abstinence. California, by contrast, requires
schools to provide information about both abstinence and birth
control; teens there also have easy access to contraception.

The subject of sex education is an emotional one that weaves
religious, moral and political beliefs into public policy. It's
time, though, for Texas to take a more dispassionate view and
consider approaches that have strong track records.

For example, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned
Pregnancy found that using straightforward and specific language
and discussing realistic situations are effective when discussing
abstinence and birth control.

Convincing teenagers to delay sex should remain a priority. But
the almost two-thirds of high school students who have sex by the
end of their senior year need a safety net – information.

Other states such as California are using programs that have been
proven effective. In Texas, teen moms such as Erandy are left to
wonder why they didn't know more about effective birth control.

Oh come onnnnnn!!!
There's no way in hell that this very intelligent young woman doesn't know
about rubbers.
An idiot may have that problem - a 12 year old may - but not this chick.
MAYBE for her fist kid - but NOT for the second.

I have no dout that the abstinence only programs are fucked up - but that's
not what her problem is.

As if abstinence and handing out condoms are the only two
possibilities. What has changed from several decade ago when
there was a far lower illegitimacy birth rate (and other problems
too) is the lack of *shame*.

Girls in schools should be told constantly that they are FILTHY
SLUTS if they spread their legs for boys when they are too young.
Boys should be taught that they are SCUMBAGS if they knock up
young girls. We've got the technology to find out which boy did it
if needed.

If it happens they should be required to wear orange prison
style jumpsuits at school with "I am a slut" or "I am a scumbag"
stamped all over them.

That's the politically correct way to say the states are flooded
with illegals. If the government did the right thing and built the
wall 20 or 30 years ago, taxpayers would have far fewer brats
to support.

Why wouldn't they? Any kids they squirt out are automatically US
citizens. They're called anchor babies.

Erandy should be told repeatedly that her children are going to be
doomed to a lifetime of mopping floors and washing dishes because
she irresponsibly let some sleazebag screw her.

And of course YOU were a virgin until you
got married, right?

Funny how so few rightwingers of abstinence
are willing to describe their OWN history of
abstinence................

Why would they?

Doing such a thing would reveal what absolutely pathetic losers
abstinence advocates are. After all, what other kind of people would
advocate such a perverted lifestyle except pathetic losers who can not
get any?

Shame and humiliation aren't the same as physical violence.

Yeah - that's what the kiddy-porn defendants usually say at their trial.
A lot of idiot right-wing fathers share that sick, twisted faith.
That's one reason why so many of them end up losing custody of their
children.

It is disgusting to impose your twisted morality

Sex is a absolutely wondrous thing and with the ability to prevent
pregnancy, why your "morality" prohibit people from enjoying it

In Sweden, it is normal for young girls to have sex with their
parent's approval; they are certainly a much more enlightened society
than we are and and they have a much lower rate of teen pregnancy and
VD
