Wei Jingsheng's Speech at the Press Conference Commemorating 1989 Tiananmen Square Legacy Held by the US House Select Committee on China
In the afternoon on June 4, 2025 at the US Capitol Triangle, the House Select Committee on China held a press conference to commemorate the legacy of Tiananmen Square and highlight the courage of dissidents and pro-democracy advocates in China today. Several members of the US Congress delivered remarks on Tiananmen Square's historic anniversary, legacy, and the courage of those pushing for democracy in China. Wei Jingsheng and Wang Dan were invited to speak as well.
Below is the speech by Mr. Wei.

Greetings to members of Congress and distinguished guests!
A hot topic of discussion now is that global democracy is declining. In fact, it is not democracy that is declining, but the concern and support of democratic countries for human rights and democracy movements in various countries is declining; the pressure on authoritarian countries and dictators is declining. Therefore, various authoritarian regimes and dictatorial forces are more rampant in suppressing people's democratic and human rights movements. It looks like democracy is declining.
Does the decline of democratic concern affect only the people of other countries? No, democratic countries will also be affected to varying degrees. The public opinion support behind the rampant terrorist actions comes from the decline of global concern for human rights. The human rights and democracy activities in authoritarian countries are gradually disappearing, and the pressure on democratic countries in international public opinion is also gradually increasing. This has become a difficult problem for Western diplomacy.
Who is most responsible for this problem? Of course, the United States, as a leader, has the greatest responsibility. On the occasion of the 36th anniversary of the June 4th Tiananmen Massacre, I call on the United States to raise human rights diplomacy to an important agenda again and increase support for human rights and democracy movements in various countries. Not just verbal support, but also practical action. This action will demonstrate the leadership of the United States and stop the trend of global democratic decline.

2025年6月4日下午，美国众议院中国事务特别委员会在美国国会大厦三角区举行新闻发布会，纪念天安门广场历史遗产，并强调当今中国异见人士和民主倡导者的勇气。多位美国国会议员就天安门广场的历史性纪念日、历史遗产以及推动中国民主的人士的勇气发表了讲话。魏京生和王丹也应邀发言。
以下是魏京生先生的讲话。

国会议员和各位来宾，大家好！
现在议论的一个热门话题，是全球民主在衰退。其实不是民主在衰退，是民主国家对各国人权民主运动的关心和支持，在衰退；对专制国家和独裁者们的压力，在衰退。于是各种专制政权和独裁势力，更加猖狂地镇压人民的民主运动和人权运动。看上去就像是民主在衰退。
民主在衰退影响的仅仅是其它国家的人民吗？不是，民主国家也会受到不同程度的影响。恐怖主义猖狂行动，背后的舆论支持就来自全球民主的衰退。专制国家的人权民主活动逐渐消失，民主国家在国际舆论上受到的压力也在逐渐加大。这已经是一个西方外交上的难题了。
对此问题谁的责任最大？当然是作为领袖的美国责任最大。值此六四天安门大屠杀三十六年的纪念活动之時，我呼吁美国重新把人权外交提高到重要的议程，加大对各国人权民主运动的支持。不只是口头上支持，还要付诸实际行动。以此显示出美国的领导作用，停止全球民主衰退的趋势。
