A Hundred Years Wasted, Two Extremes Reached
-- Wei Jingsheng
Recently, the CCP's public opinion has started to praise the Boxer Rebellion again. Most of the sober people in China and the world know that the
so-called Boxer Movement was a group of idiot banditry under the connivance of the ruling group. Its ideological root was the self-satisfaction and
xenophobia among the people at the bottom caused by the megalomania and isolation of the country since the Ming and Qing Dynasties in China.
China under Xi Jinping now seems to have returned to that era. The root of the so-called nationalism is megalomania and isolation of the country.
From the public opinion, this self-satisfaction coupled with xenophobic tendencies has already begun long ago. Even racism, which has not been Chinese
culture since ancient times, is rampant. It's indeed hard to learn something good, but easy to learn something bad quickly.
Back then, when European countries were learning from the successful cultural, institutional, and technological achievements of the world and rapidly moving
toward modernization, China began the megalomaniac and closed-door isolation of the Ming and Qing dynasties. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, Western
cannons carried with new culture and new technologies stroked the self-confidence of this old empire. As a result, two backlashes arose: one extreme
was Complete Westernization, dominated by half-knowing literati; the other was a movement to defend the backward system, based on ignorant religious and
superstitious organizations. The struggle between these two created a wasted century in China – with every step forward it went backward two steps,
until finally it reached the communist serf system that brought China two thousand years backwards.
After these two schools of thought competed, eventually a third faction appeared from the Complete Westernization faction. On the surface it was
completely Westernized, as it learned from Communism, one of the freaks of Western thought. But in China, it actually was a hybrid of Western freaks
and Eastern serfdom -- Soviet-style serfdom. In Russia, they had only gone backwards for more than a hundred years, and the Russian people's discomfort
was not too serious. In China, under a more than 2,000-year setback, the Chinese people and society are seriously out of whack. This is the
fundamental reason why resistance against Communism in China predates the Soviet Union.
Although Deng Xiaoping's half-way reforms had many shortcomings, he made China abandon its isolation and restore economic vitality. This is his great
contribution to China. But, in order to not give up the autocratic politics of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Deng greatly restricted the
development of the market economy. This shows that he had not chosen the path of modernization well, and was still hesitating and only half-way
reforming. In the era of Xi Jinping, we are already faced with a situation of advancing or retreating. The so-called Chinese model, after losing
the prospect of Western blood transfusion, has to find a new way out.
A step forward is to make up for the shortcomings of Deng Xiaoping's reform, by combining the reform of the political system with the reform of the legal and
economic system, so China can embark on the path of healthy development of democracy and a market economy. This is the normal path of
modernization. A step back is to return to Mao Zedong's Soviet-style feudal serfdom combined with a one-party dictatorship system. Comrade Xi
Jinping has Stockholm Syndrome and likes the Soviet-style autocracy that persecuted his family in the past. He chose to go back to the Mao Zedong era,
politically developing a Western-style modern autocracy with a serfdom-styled state-run planned economy, in order to cooperate with autocratic politics.
This road is obviously a dead end, and it can only make China fall behind and fall apart. Not only will it fail to preserve the one-party dictatorship
of the CCP, but it will also lead to a catastrophe that is even more tragic than the Cultural Revolution. Does China still have a future? This is
a question that friends of all factions will ask. Complete Westernization is impossible, and to stand still is also impossible, and the hybrid of a
Communist system is even more hopeless. What should be done then?
Only by honestly studying the successful experiences of European and American countries, learning all the successful ideas, cultures, institutional and
scientific and technological achievements in the world, and developing democracy and the rule of law on the basis of our own national culture, can we catch
up with developed countries and enter the big modern family. Japan, Korea and Taiwan are examples of success in the East.
As the old Chinese saying goes: hasty attempts will cause delays. Mao Zedong and a group of May Fourth literati all wanted to run into communism or
whatever-ism, but the result was a disaster. Yet Americans started from pragmatism and honesty to improve their lives, and have developed into the most
advanced country in the world. This historical experience is worthy of our careful study. We should not be ambitious for things we are unable to
reach.
