On December 18, 2024, Mr. Wei Jingsheng, chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, and Dr. Zhang Jie, a legal scholar and independent commentator, were invited by Voice of America to participate in the "Current Affairs Show" hosted by Mr. Xu Bo. This program has been warmly welcomed by viewers and listeners. Topic 1: Xi Jinping Promotes the "Self-Revolution" of the CCP: Who Will Get Heads Chopped Off As Xi's "Blades Turn Inward"?
The latest issue of "Seeking Truth" published Xi Jinping's speech at a plenary meeting of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection in January of this year, entitled "Deepening the Self-Revolution of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)". Xi Jinping said: With the changes in the situation and tasks, the external environment and the changes in the CCP members themselves, various contradictions and problems will inevitably arise within the CCP. "We must have the courage to turn the blade inward to eliminate various negative influences in a timely manner to ensure that the party is always full of vigor and vitality". Foreign media think that this is a signal that Xi Jinping will further promote the anti-corruption campaign within the CCP, but some Chinese observers see that Xi Jinping may go further this time. Xi called for the courage to "turn the blade inward" and "self-revolution" to solve the "various contradictions and problems" that have emerged within the party. This is a striking trend. At present, China's economy is in a downturn, people's livelihoods are declining, and dissatisfaction is pervasive inside and outside the party. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Daily, the official newspaper of the CCP's army, published two articles last week emphasizing that the military must adhere to collective leadership and promote intra-party democracy. The article "Take the Lead in Upholding Collective Leadership" quoted Deng Xiaoping's statement, which emphasized that the CCP's leadership is "the collective leadership of the party committee, not the leadership of one or two people", and "individuals must never be above the collective leadership." Two days later, an article entitled "Take the Lead in Promoting Intra-party Democracy" emphasized that although the party-secretary is the "head of a group", he must never regard himself as the "head of a family" nor regard the responsibility of presiding over the daily work of the party organization as a power higher than other members. Observers pointed out that the PLA Daily's repeated emphasis on collective leadership and intra-party democracy seems to be in obvious contradiction with the "Chairman of the Military Commission's responsibility system" and the "one person in charge" within the CCP that Xi Jinping has always emphasized since he came to power.
