US Lawmakers Commemorate the 36th Anniversary of the June 4th Massacre and Call for Actions to Hold Accountable Human Rights Violations
June 5, 2025
-- reported by Michael Lipin, Voice of America
Capitol Hill — On the 36th anniversary of the June 4th Tiananmen Massacre, US lawmakers vowed to continue to remember the victims and called for actions to
hold the Chinese government accountable for human rights violations.
Republican and Democratic members of the House Select Committee on the CCP held a press conference outside the US Capitol on Wednesday (June 4), strongly
criticizing Beijing's poor human rights record and expressing support for Chinese democracy activist Wei Jingsheng and June 4th student movement leader Wang
Dan. Both Wei Jingsheng and Wang Dan attended the press conference and recalled their experiences during the 1989 Tiananmen democracy movement.
On June 4, 1989, Chinese troops entered Beijing's Tiananmen Square to clear the area, suppressing weeks of peaceful protests by students and workers with
force. At that time, protesters were demanding that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) promote democratic reforms and end authoritarian rule.
Western media, citing human rights groups and witnesses, said hundreds or even thousands of people were killed in the crackdown. Chinese officials have
never released a death toll.
John Moolenaar, a Republican congressman from Michigan and chairman of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, called on the mayor of
Washington DC to end the sister city relationship with Beijing, saying that the move was symbolic but extremely important, reflecting a position of rejecting
the propaganda of the Chinese Communist Party and supporting the Chinese people rather than the oppressors.
The office of Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser has not yet commented on this proposal. Moolenaar told VOA that he had written to Bowser on Wednesday to
formally make this request.
Washington and Beijing have had a sister city relationship since 1984 and have renewed it multiple times, most recently in 2012.
At the Capitol Hill gathering, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, the committee's top Democrat, said: "Today, China's means of suppressing dissent may
have changed -- cameras instead of batons, algorithms instead of violence - but the CCP's goal has never changed: to suppress dissent, stifle dreams, and
deprive people of their basic dignity."
In an interview with VOA after the press conference, Moolenaar also said he hopes the Trump administration will do more to enforce regulations targeting
American companies that profit from forced labor in China.
"We have identified supply chains associated with forced labor and have issued warnings to American companies, encouraging them to seek alternative sources
of procurement," Moolenaar said. "We want to ensure that the U.S. supply chain is not controlled by the Chinese Communist Party and does not cooperate with
China's military-industrial complex."
