Speech at the Japanese Diet to Commemorate the  June 4th Massacre in 1989
-- Wei Jingsheng
June 4, 2024

Today, we are here to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Democracy Movement.  Why do we want to commemorate that movement?  First, the 1989 movement was a turning point in Chinese history.  Before that, most Chinese still believed in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and thought they could negotiate with the Chinese Communist Party to reform towards democracy and freedom.  However, Deng Xiaoping used the June 4th massacre to wake up the people and told them that the essence of the CCP is dictatorship and that it would not hesitate to kill people to maintain the oppression and exploitation for a small group of their own people.  Now no one believes in the CCP, including Communist Party members.

The second point is that the movement, like the Democracy Wall Movement in China, was not just a Chinese movement.  It affected many countries around the world and eventually led to the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the changes in Eastern European countries.  It changed the world's political landscape and promoted the disintegration of the Communist camp.

Thank you to all the Japanese friends for coming together to commemorate the heroes who died in that movement.  Special thanks to Mr. Makino Seishu and Mr. Wang Jinzhong for organizing this event at the Japanese Diet.  Thank you to all the friends who came to participate.  Thank you.
