Our Generation Is Just a Stepping Stone for Others

Thirty-six years ago, the June 4th massacre shocked the world. The Chinese Communist Party's army drove tanks into Beijing, massacred thousands of students and citizens, and stopped China's movement towards civilization and progress. For more than a hundred years, the ideals that Chinese people of lofty thoughts have fought for and sacrificed their lives for have been suppressed by authoritarian forces every time. However, now, more and more people understand the importance of democracy and freedom, and join the ranks of efforts for this purpose. The day of realizing these ideals is getting closer and closer.
Many people complain why there is no result yet after such a long time? First of all, for a country as big as ours, the process is definitely not as easy as it would be for a small country. Secondly, it is natural that democracy first succeeded in some small countries and gradually expanded to the whole world. Looking back at the process of other countries moving towards democracy and freedom, it was also not successful in one day. So we must be mentally prepared for the long-term and complexity of efforts. Our generation is just a stepping stone for others. Any successful institutional transformation must have such a group of sacrifices. The idea of success without paying a price is too naive.
Every year at this time, we commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed for democracy and freedom. This commemoration is also an encouragement to our comrades who fight for their ideals every year. In the current unfavorable international and domestic situation for China, it is our main task to maintain confidence and to hold the banner of battle. These things have ups and downs, lows and highs. We are accumulating strength now so that when the high tide comes, we are prepared to overthrow the autocratic political system and establish a new China of democracy and freedom.

三十六年前，发生了震惊世界的大屠杀。中国共产党的军队开着坦克进入北京，屠杀了成千上万的学生和市民，阻止了中国迈向文明与进步的运动。一百多年来，中国的仁人志士们抛头颅洒热血为之奋斗的理想，每次都被专制的势力打压下去了。但是越来越多的人理解了民主自由的重要性，并为此加入了努力的行列，实现这一理想的日子，因此而越来越近了。
很多人抱怨这么久了，为什么还没有结果呢？首先是我们这么大的国家，过程肯定不如小国那么容易。其次是民主在一些小国首先成功，逐渐扩展到全世界，这是个顺理成章的事情。回顾其它国家走向民主自由的过程，也不是在一天之内就成功。所以我们对努力的长期性和复杂性要有思想准备。我们这一代人就是为他人做嫁衣裳，垫脚石。任何成功的制度转型都要有这样一批牺牲者。不付出代价就成功的想法过于天真。
每年这个时间我们都来纪念为了民主自由牺牲的先烈们。这种纪念也是对每年都为了理想而奋斗的同道们的鼓励。在目前国际国内形势都不利的情况下，保持信心和战斗的旗帜，是我们的主要任务。事情都有起伏和涨跌，有低潮也会有高潮。我们现在积蓄力量，是为了高潮到来时，推翻专制政治体制，建立民主自由的新中国。
