Hi everyone,

Just wanted to check in and see if anyone had any thoughts yet on doing a reprise of VoteReport for the midterm election in November. Given the advancements with Ushahidi, the continued growth of smartphones, plus geolocation tools like Gowalla and foursquare, we could probably come up with some interesting innovations this time around.

Andy --

Some obvious ideas:

-- Make a Foursquare/Gowalla "I Voted" badge; push polling-place questionnaire link through those apps
-- Let Foursquare/Gowalla use this as a PR/Civics push to help them build their brand/relevance
-- Play up social voting pressure angle (look, 10 of my friends just voted, OMG!) in a mid-term year that might not otherwise get a lot of traction

I know Josh Williams and Dennis Crowley. I can pitch this idea to one or both of them. I love the idea of directing them with some design ideas and having them provide a big chunk of the underlying infrastructure. There's no reason we should have to build stuff totally from scratch this round.

I'm in, thx for getting the ball rolling Andy. Great ideas, Dave, perhaps we could schedule a call for whoever wants to join to discuss what we'd want to accomplish, what holes/needs are unfilled, etc?

I think we should pitch it to both of them, since everything we’ve done so far with VoteReport has been based on openness and multiple platform participation. Might make one hell of a story, too, if we could get them cooperating for the sake of civic participation and voter protection. I’m 95% positive NPR will be game for doing something this time around; already been asked a few times what we’ve got up our sleeves for the midterms.

Meanwhile, it looks like Google is still working on their Polling Place Locator API; they’ve got a session about it coming up at OSCON in July. The project’s technical lead, Jonathan Blocksom (@jblocksom) is based in Google’s DC office.

We're in too.

How many people are planning on attending PdF June 3-4? We could make
some time on Saturday to work on this...

I'm thrilled to hear vote report perking back up! I have some designs
from the old Swift River fork which I would love to fold back in,
where appropriate. (Haml and Sass and jQuery.)

I also might be able to recommend some points of collaboration with
Ushahidi.

I'm in Africa this week but looking forward to catching up later to
see how I might be of use.

Superbest
