Who might be interested in reviving TVR for 2012, and if so, what do
you think could make it better?

Tempting idea.

What could make it better:
  • More lead time (check)
  • More explicit strategy, and methodology for identifying issues at polls
  • More explicit governance framework (both for partners, and for team decision-making)
  • More of the kind of awesome volunteer collaborators we had in 2008

It may be good to ping the Crisis Mappers Google Group and Standby Task Force if you think it would help having more hands on deck.

Twitter is much more of a standard platform now in terms of who's using it and the scale. Outreach should be easier. And with all of the voter ID law changes in the states, reporting your vote is likely to be very important this year.

We should definitely do it again. Thanks for getting the wheels turning Micah!

I don't remember if we had this last time, but it would be great if we could build out a companion mobile site (volunteering myself to design it if you need someone) for both reporting and monitoring. I'd imagine this would work across multiple devices and be flexible width and not OS-specific (not an iPhone or droid app).

The goal would be to help campaign managers/field directors on Election Day know what's happening in their district. A good example of why campaign staff needs this - in the 2010 NYS Senate primary, Gustavo Rivera's put out a press release by 11am with a full list of corrupt activities they had seen around the district.

Honestly, it should probably be more built-in around Foursquare or
Facebook check-ins, than Twitter. This is what we essentially did with
the mobile apps for TVR last time around - incorporate GPS check-in
along side increased metadata around polling places.

I expect Foursquare to offer their "I Voted" badget, as they did in the
2010 elections, so maybe this could be an enhancement on top of that.

I also Twilio is another platform upon which a more sophiscated voice
and SMS system could be built, automatically connecting and routing
people in smart ways to the resources they need.

Yeah, I think Foursquare would be a great base to build on. Recommend calling it "VoteReport 2012" and mining multiple channels.

1) Mine any Foursquare checkins that happen
2) Dedicated VoteReport app that opens up, directs people to polling place, automates 4sq checkin
3) Accept audio/video/photos from the field via app
4) Twilio/similar for SMS checkin
5) Mine Twitter hashtags/mentions
6) Possibly mine Facebook checkins / status mentions (they're public)

I'm thinking some kind of polymorphic CouchDB document set to aggregate the everything, combined with a RDBMS for reporting.

I'm all in, thanks, Micah!

Multiple channels and multiple fair election partners are keys, IMO.

Would love to participate again. Should we set up a conference call or meeting for everyone to discuss?

I like David's idea to mine several formats. The key for TVR 2012 is going to be getting people to report on voting conditions again, not just that they voted, or even where.

I would be excited to be involved again as well.

I have independently been speaking to some people from this organization:

They might be interested in sharing their (or consuming our) data or otherwise collaborating.

Folks, Micah suggested I tell you what's my deal regarding election protection. short version ...

In the last coupla months, finally sunk in that this is a really big deal and that I should pay attention. I plan to figure out what's current, then help
people doing the real work.  I plan to stay outta the way and to promote the efforts of people getting stuff done.

Currently, trying to get some clarity regarding help with voter registration and election monitoring tech.  Have been working with VotoLatino for years,
will get an update shortly. Now working with Election Protection Coalition, Brennan Center, Rock The Vote, and Ushahidi.

Guessing that reports could flow into a Ushahidi database, providing a site which could include a "mission control" style map which could show what's going
on where, for better or worse. Twitter vote reports could flow into that. Concern: organized disinformation attacks.  (I'm deliberately very paranoid about this stuff.)

That's the very short version; "brevity's the soul of wit". It's all in development, and you can ask here, or via craig at craigslist.org or craig.newmark at gmail.com

(This is a personal craigconnects.org thing, not craigslist)

thanks! /Craig

seems to be the best thing to what TVR was trying to do. Anyone
intersted in helping them get/do more?
