[Discussion] Should we translate 'Mention' or not?

Hello guys,

Ayo kita diskusiin disini apakah mention mau dijadiin tetep 'mention', atau dijadiin 'sebutan'.

I prefer to keep it as 'Mention'.

If we take a look these are current Tweets from Indonesian people:

'gw mention lu tadi kok gak dibales sih?'

'wah, mention penuh nih gara2 kalian'

'gw mau mention lu, tapi salah ketik jadinya salah mention'

'wah asiik gw dimention sama artis'

If we translate 'Mention' to 'Menyebut', 'Disebut' or 'Sebutan' it will be a little confusing for current Twitter User:

'gw menyebut lu tadi kok gak dibales sih?'

'wah, sebutan penuh nih gara2 kalian'

'gw mau menyebut lu, tapi salah ketik jadinya salah menyebut'

'wah asiik gw disebut sama artis'

And if we search on the Twitter Search with the keyword 'gw mention' and 'udah mention', there are many new tweets on the result. And there is even an account named @MentionKe  (https://twitter.com/#!/MentionKe) that is very popular, (350k followers). Indonesian tweeps is already confortable with this term.

In my opinion, the important part of Translating Twitter to Indonesian on the Email Notification, Tutorial, Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, etc. Terms like 'Mention', 'Tweet', 'Retweet', 'Timeline', doesn't need to be translated, to let us communicate with other Twitter User accross the globe.

What's you opinion about this?

I don't think you can use current usage of the word as justification.
Since currently there are no Indonesian version of twitter, of course
they are using the English word. :)

Whether you translate it or not will have little bearing on usage of the word since people are already comfortable in using the English version. 

Tech related terms are mostly adopted from English anyway and usage of Indonesian words will undoubtedly be resisted by the public despite strong campaign. 

Look at Firefox and Windows for example, or even iOS. The number of people using localized version is negligible but they get translated and updated anyway, so I say translate it for  the sake of consistency.

My name is Laura and I am the manager of Localization (International) team - at Twitter, we believe in localizing and translating terms as closely as we can!

Even if people are used to the English word, as a community, there is a push to make sure that all users (not limited to web, tech, people) can understand Twitter.  Try to put yourself in the shoes of the everyday person/.

By not translating @mentions, think of the non-moderators/translators users that would be affected.  What about your cousin? Your grandmother? A stranger on the street. Do they understand the English version of @mention?

If not, let's revisit the conversation.  Let's make it as localized as we can.

Hello,

I am thinking about 'Mention' as a 'Twitter Word', so when Indonesian user is interacting with another user from outside Indonesia, they both understand that the word 'Mention' means 'Mentioning other user on the Tweet', just like they understand 'Tweet' is 'A 140chars message on Twitter'.

But after seeing you guys said that we should translate it, and moreover Laura said that we should translate the terms as closely as we can, let's just translate 'mention' to 'sebutan'. :)
