Express Scribe is a free and professional audio player designed to help typists transcribe recordings. It comes with a variety of features, including playback speed control, speech to text integration engine, and pedal control. Scribe transcription supports a variety of file formats that you can load via CD players, LAN, and local hard drives. The software also provides support for hand-held recorders so users can transfer audio quickly and easily. Developed by NCH Software, the transcribing tool is also available for download on Mac devices. It is now also available on the new OS, Windows 11.

Using Express Scribe is quite straightforward. You need to select a dictation file or audio recording to begin transcribing. Since the tool supports both video and audio formats, you can have your pick with regards to the files you wish to transcribe. You can even transcribe song lyrics or movie subtitles using the software.

Express Scribe comes with variable speed playback, so you can control the speed of the recordings and play them according to your requirements. It also supports the use of portable recorders and can transcribe audio formats without any trouble.

When I am within the Express Scribe box and the window is activated, the hot keys work just fine, using the second function for the F key. (What I mean by this, for example, is F4 on my keyboard has a secondary use for play/pause. However, Express Scribe is set for F4 to stop and F9 to play. The F9 key has a secondary use for the "search" feature for my windows 10. When the express scribe box is active, the F4 key works to start and stop the audio, F9 does not play the audio, it in fact, pulls up the computer wide search box from the windows start menu. F4, however, works properly as it's secondary function for start/stop.)

I needed to insert timestamps into various interviews we transcribe, so I Googled this topic and came up with a wide variety of people trying to write Word macros and various work-arounds (such as typing CRTL+T, ALT+TAB, CTRL+V, ALT+TAB, etc.) to insert time stamps.

To delete a file press Ctrl+Delete or click the Delete icon from the secondary toolbar, and then confirm that you wish to delete the file. Deleted files cannot be recovered. We recommend you mark files Done instead, as described above.

Express Scribe not only enables the transcription of a wide range of audio files, but will also allow you to manually transcribe video file formats - perfect for creating text transcripts of web meetings held on Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

If you often convert audio files to text, you'll already know that using a regular music player can be a nightmare. You have to start and stop the audio file again and again, and often you don't have any tools to help you hear a word or sound more clearly. Express Scribe is a convenient tool that helps you transcribe so efficiently that you'll never have to use your standard audio player again. You'll find everything you need in this application for transcribing texts without wasting any time.

It's compatible with the following formats: WAV, MP3, AU, AIF, VOX, DCT, Windows Media, VoiceIt (SRI), RealAudio (RA y RM), Olympus, Lanier & Grundig (DSS), Sony Recorder formats (MSV, DVF), Philips Digital Recorder, Sanyo Digital Recorder, DSP TrueSpeech*, GSM 6.10, MP2, PCM, uLaw, ALaw, ADPCM, and CE ... in other words, almost any format used by older or more modern recording devices. This is, without a doubt, one of the best tools for transcribers.

It is simple to deliver great transcribing assignments when you use Express Scribe. If you're looking for an easy-to-use transcription tool, Express scribe is the way to go. It is reasonably priced, professionally grade, and performs everything it is supposed to do.

I think Express Scribe is the ultimate tool for transcribers because of its numerous and powerful features. I like Express scribe because it has so many settings which help you make the process of transcribing easy. Examples of such settings include the sub-tab for 'playback' where you can specify settings for either playing 'increasing speed' or 'constant speed,' 'default slow playback speed,' 'default fast playback speed,' 'autobackstep on stop,' among other settings.

Another advantage of Express scribe is that it is easy to integrate it with other software for more functionality. For example, you can connect Express Scribe with software that converts audio to text. Your work will be easier since the only thing you need to do is edit the transcript that has been done with the software.

Comments:Generally, I think express scribe is the best software for transcribing. No tool can much up to the functionality that comes with it. I would advice an upcoming transcriber to give it a shot.

My most favorite thing about Express Scribe is that it has many features that help you work faster. Some of this features include shortcuts for starting/stopping the audio, rewinding, forwarding, playing fast speed, playing slow speed. I think my favorite feature is the setting that allows you to 'auto backstep on stop.' This allows you to automatically rewind a word or two from where you left off. I have always loved this feature because it allows you to have a smooth continuity as you are transcribing. making you work faster.Another thing I like about Express Scribe is that it easy to use. The software is less than 1 MB and the process of installing it is very starting forward and first. Once you have it installed, it is just a matter of dragging and dropping an audio file into the, and you can begin transcribing immediately.Since Express scribe is a desktop application, you do not need an internet connection to use the software. As a transcriber, this can significantly reduce your data costs.

F9 is for playing, F4 for stopping, F7 for rewinding, F8 For fast forwarding, among other shortcuts. These shortcuts are really awesome. I don't know what I would do without the shortcuts.Another advantage of Express scribe is that it is easy to integrate it with other software for more functionality. The disadvantage of Express Scribe is that the interface offered by the software for typing is not the best since it doesn't help in proofreading. Like it doesn't show you misspelled words and other corrections like Microsoft Word does. I actually don't use the interface anymore. I use Express Scribe for everything else but when it comes to typing out my transcripts, I use Microsoft Word. In short, I use Express Scribe and Microsoft Word simultaneously.Another challenge with Express scribe is that it is not free. They only offer a trial period for the software. After the trial period, you have to pay for the software.

Going digital for language samples is a relatively easy process. Digital files improve the overall quality of the language sample and simplify the transcription process. There are three basic steps to working with digital files: 1) record the language sample with a digital audio or video recorder, 2) transfer the digital file to your computer, and 3) control the playback of the digital file while you transcribe the sample.

On January 31, I presented a webinar about Express Scribe, a free transcription program I've been using to transcribe content for clients who need their audio recordings time coded and translated. This webinar session, "Express Scribe: Free Audio Transcription Software," was offered through Proz.com.
