hello, I was wondering if you might have a plan for a Boy Scout project? This would be in the 8yrs to 10yrs of age. I have all the basic woodworking tools and was looking for an assembly only project requiring basic hand tools and instructions. I really don't want to do the birdhouse, squirrel feeder again this year. I really want a rustic look to the project. can u help Thanks

Dear Jason:
I got a call yesterday from a school teacher in Missouri who wanted 24
diamond willow walking canes for the kids (Jr.High) to work with. She
thought it would be neat if they could personalize the walking cane,
like put on the finishing touches, leather, and feathers around the
top handle, and sign their name before putting on a coat of water-
based varnish. The kids would have to figure out the length of the
cane, cut off the unwanted ends, and sand it down smooth. Perhaps the
best challenge might be to design an appropriate handle for the cane.
Such as, maybe there wouldn't be a handle at all, or one on the top,
or one with finger dents sanded into the wood. Maybe someone really
wants to get creative and carve, dremel, wood burn (pyrography) or
apply different stains or paints before coating the handle, or the
cane itself to sign, date, and personalize the stick.

Show the kids some pictures of diamond willow canes and walking
sticks. If you can get ahold of a few willow branches, let them
figure out how to sand and shape it, dig out the "diamonds" to how
they want them to look, and design their cane. If it's a gift for
their father, grandpa, or somebody else, have them figure out how tall
it should be so it fits the recipient. Get some shoe laces, beads,
and feathers, that they can use to decorate the cane.

If that idea isn't possible, let me know and I'll think of something
else....

Good luck!

Sandy
