I'm just checking to see if anyone in the group has already written to any of the Police Commissioner candidates for S Yorks to ask for their views on 20mph speed limits on residential roads?

Id like to put some statements up on the web site

Thanks

Ian

PS attached is a suggested form letter from the national group

Dear ,

I should like to know your view on the implementation of 20mph default speed limits without physical calming devices in all residential areas and places much frequented by vulnerable road users I.e. cyclists and pedestrians. I am referring to complete  urban coverage - apart from arterial roads which remain at 30mph - as opposed to isolated zones at 20mph, within a conurbation/ village.

As you may surmise, I am passionately in favour of this policy as are the vast majority of road users in the country - over 75% of drivers agree.   It is the one, single action which, at a stroke, improves our lives together on so many fronts. Apart from the paramount advantage  of greater safety, so many other benefits accrue:health ( more cycling and walking), environmental (less pollution at lower, steady speeds), social ( old and young can move more freely, independently and without fear in their living areas which are their streets). There are now over 8 million citizens in the UK enjoying this civilized regime and from our many conversations, whilst collecting petition signatures, it is clear that there is overwhelming support here in YOUR TOWN. Some police forces in areas where this reform has been implemented initially declared themselves unenthusiastic but, in fact, the work load is no more than enforcing the 30mph limit.

I look forward to hearing your views very shortly.

Yours sincerely,

I'm away till Saturday but ill see if I can dig out some direct emails
for the other candidates.

Would it be better if the email came from
in...@20splentyforsheffield.org.uk or private individuals?

A cycle campaigner from Burry Port, Wales, writes:-

"I've had the chance to chat to two of our candidates and frankly they are clueless. I asked if they understood the priorities of a constable - i.e. what the police are actually supposed to do. These are laid down as the "Duties of a Constable" - I know, I used to be one many years ago!

They are:-

1 The protection of life.
2. The protection of property.
3. The prevention and detection of crime.
4 The maintenance of the Queens Peace.

Time has blurred matters a little and I'm not sure if number 4 comes first BUT the point is that neither candidate understood what the police were actually supposed to do. They both thought preventing crime was the be all and end all of the job - a lot of bluster about anti-social behaviour and the drugs problem in Llanelli but nothing about what is really at the heart of policing. Sadly I suspect that most of our "constables" of what ever rank have also forgotten this.

Obviously "protection of life" should include better policing of our roads and this "duty" should be of prime importance to us as cycle campaigners."

I think this equally applies to 20's plenty for us campaigners.

In light of the claims and allegations of corruption in the SY police I'd like the police commissioners to ensure that there are less criminals inside the police force than outside it!

all this stuff on the advertising for the voting is all about tackling crime as opposed to setting the agenda for the police in terms of ethics and action

Mick
