Judges Andrew Adams, Sabrina Bell and Bradley Jacobs were censured by the Indiana Supreme Court for their roles in a brawl outside a White Castle in May. Indiana Supreme Court hide caption
Back in May, three Indiana judges got into a fight. It was the crescendo of an incident brimming with colorful details: a gaggle of judges drinking the night before a judicial conference, a failed attempt to visit a strip club called the Red Garter, a brawl in the parking lot of an Indianapolis White Castle.
The altercation apparently started sometime after 3 a.m., when one of the judges, Sabrina Bell, raised a middle finger at two men yelling from a passing SUV, and ended after one of those men shot two of the judges.
"While in town to attend a statewide educational conference for judicial
officers, 10 hours before the program convened, Respondents walked the
streets of downtown Indianapolis in a heavily intoxicated state. When
Judge Bell extended her middle finger to a passing vehicle, neither Judge
Adams nor Judge Jacobs discouraged the provocation or removed
themselves from the situation."
Bell and Vazquez traded further insults. A physical altercation ensued among the four men, with Adams and Vazquez allegedly hitting and kicking each other as Jacobs and Kaiser wrestled on the ground. Kaiser then allegedly pulled a gun and shot Adams once in the stomach and Jacobs twice in the chest.
While at the scene, Bell was recorded on video telling police detectives something akin to "I feel like this is all my fault," though the opinion notes that Bell "was intoxicated enough that she lacks any memory of the incident."
The court suspended both Jacobs and Bell for 30 days without pay. Adams, who pleaded guilty in September to one count of misdemeanor battery, is suspended for 60 days without pay. He was sentenced to 365 days in jail but was required to serve only two.
The court says its penalties are designed "not primarily to punish a judge, but rather to preserve the integrity of and public confidence in the judicial system" and, when necessary, to remove those who are unfit.
The video was evidence in a grand jury and had been under seal for three years. The seal lifted because the last defendant facing criminal charges associated with the fight was found guilty last week.
Marion Superior Court Judge Shatrese Flowers released the video to WRTV on Thursday, eight days after a jury found Brandon Kaiser, the gunman, guilty of aggravated battery and other crimes for his role in the incident.
Jacobs and Adams were in Indianapolis to attend a judicial conference. According to testimony in Kaiser's trial, they had been drinking heavily with other judges at several Downtown restaurants and bars when they stopped at the White Castle, 55 W. South St., about 3:30 a.m. May 1, 2019.
Jacobs and Adams and Crawford County Judge Sabrina Bell were in the fast food restaurant's parking lot when two men drove by in an SUV. One of the men yelled something and Bell"extended her middle finger to the occupants of the SUV," according to court documents.
The men in the SUV, Kaiser and his nephew Alfredo Vazquez, parked and approached the judges, video shows. The four can be seen grappling and throwing punches. The fight ended when Kaiser pulled a handgun and shot Adams and Jacobs. Both survived their wounds.
On Sept. 21, a Marion County jury convicted Kaiser, 44, of seven felonies and one misdemeanor in connection with the fight and shootings. The most serious offenses, two counts of aggravated battery, each carry a maximum sentence of 16 years in prison. Kaiser, who claimed he fired the shots in self defense, is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 21.
Vazquez pleaded guilty to battery in November 2019. A judge sentenced him to six months home detention and a year of probation. Vazquez completed his sentence and was discharged from probation in December 2020, records show.

I saw this movie via one of the online streaming services. It was most likely Amazon Prime. This scene was one important for the main character development (male). I recall that he liked to ride a horse. He might have been Black.
The war / battle scene involving this huge white castle with long drawbridge involved a huge number of enemies. They eventually overwhelmed the castle's defences and penetrated its walls. This led to the death of a lot of people hiding inside the castle.
@Valorum mentioned the movie Krull. It looks interesting and something I will have to put on my watchlist. However, this movie was not Krull. I believe the main character was Black. The people in the movie were also normal humans - but I am not sure about the opposing army. This movie was also more modern than Krull - made in the late 90s or early 00's.
@JMERICKS mentioned Army of Darkness. I just saw the [trailer] and this isn't it either. This movie was more serious. It was also much more colorful and set in a more realistic tone. The premise was more "plausible", if you will.1
Updated 5/17:More gritty, more realistic with much better CGI. I honestly was 100% convinced it was from the LOTR so watched all six movies again (extended editions). No Gandalf-like character - just a humble person who was in the right (wrong?) place at the right time. There's a scene where he is riding his horse into the castle. They then prepare for a war, which is basically the majority of the movie. I saw the movie 5-10 years ago, and the movie itself couldn't be older than the 1990s - more likely 2000s.
There were catapults, ladders, archers - oh, and I think they dropped a fire bomb from up above onto a bunch of enemies. I couldn't be thinking of that popular TV show Game of Thrones, right? I remember the undead storming the white walls in the north later in the series, but as best as I can recall, there wasn't a scene like what I am describing earlier in the series, right?
@skyjackAlso not D&D. This movie was definitely more "realistic". I really thought it was LoTR. Same cinematography. Same level of acting. Same polished special effects. Thanks for taking the time to look!
A couple more details - when the enemy does break through into the castle, there's another scene where the main character (and others?) run into some underground, poorly lit passageway. This is how they escape from the castle at the end. I swear this was a movie - but just to cover my bases, this isn't a scene out of The Walking Dead, is it??
Updated 5/26:@skyjack I actually watched the Warcraft movies just to be sure. Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Those aren't it either. The live action in this film was much more realistic and believable - just like LoTR. I appreciate you looking!
A few more details:This was a post-modern, post nuclear holocaust type event. The castle was large, and the castle siege itself was sort of the main event. The main character escaped via an underground tunnel - they were not able to save the castle. This was not a historical or historical fiction type of movie. I don't recall for sure whether the enemy laying siege was fictional - but I do believe that it was something evil. Zombies? Goblins? Just another army? I am not sure. As I mentioned earlier, I really thought it was from LoTR, but as I have clarified, I watched the extended versions and it was not there.
Three Indiana judges involved in a downtown Indianapolis fight in May that ended with two of the judges shot have been suspended without pay after the Indiana Supreme Court determined they committed judicial misconduct.
Adams, who was the only judge criminally charged in the case, pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor battery in September. He received a sentence of 365 days in jail, a credit for two days served. The remaining 363 days of the sentence were suspended, meaning Adams served no additional jail time.
All three judges received suspensions but will eventually return to their offices. Adams was suspended without pay for 60 days beginning Tuesday, the court said. He will be reinstated as judge of the Clark Circuit Court 1 on Jan. 13.
Adams, Jacobs and Bell were standing outside the restaurant when Alfredo Vazquez and Brandon Kaiser drove past the trio in a blue SUV. According to charging documents from the Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications, either Kaiser or Vazquez yelled something out the window, which prompted Bell to give the middle finger to the men.
Vazquez, according to the charges, parked his SUV. After he and Kaiser exited the vehicle, a verbal altercation ensued, court documents said. It then turned violent when Adams and Jacobs moved toward Vazquez and Kaiser, the commission said.
