The usage is different, although occasionally the words are interchangeable.
The main difference can be seen if I explain it this way:
a series of articles in a newspaper
= a number of independent articles that have something in common, e.g.
written by the same author, or written about the same topic or the same
theme, or using the same characters, etc.
a serial in a newspaper
= a number of pieces published that are dependent on each other, that form
part of a continuing story, e.g. a book that has been broken down into small
segments or chapters for publication one at a time.
So, you can listen to a serial on the radio (all one story read in pieces on
different days), or watch a series on television (about the same family or
situation, but relatively independent or self-contained stories each time).
