UBC admission outranking Queen's
88% needed in commerce
VANCOUVER -- UBC may now be the toughest school in the country to get into,
admissions officials at the Vancouver campus say.
A surge in applications over the last two years has forced UBC to increase
the minimum grades required from high school students to be guaranteed
admission, to 86% for science and engineering programs, 82% for arts and 88%
for commerce.
The entrance requirements are the highest ever for UBC, increasing about
five percentage points in some cases.
''It's scary,'' said David Holm, the acting registrar. Holm says it appears
the West Coast campus has overtaken some of Canada's older schools --
Queen's University, the University of Toronto and McGill University--
as the most selective in the country, though not exactly by choice.
"We are certainly popular. Maybe too popular,'' he said.
While UBC's entering grades may be the highest overall, the commerce degree
at Queen's University, commanded a staggering minimum of 89.2% last year.
Queen's will not calculate new entering grades until later this month, said
a spokeswoman, but it is not expecting significant changes for this September.
UBC's high marks are likely to be bested by Ontario schools, however,
as they struggle to accommodate an additional 80,000 students looking for
university enrollment in September, 2003, following the elimination of
Grade 13 throughout the province.
Prestigious engineering programs at the University of Toronto and
the University of Waterloo, for example, are already among the most
competitive in the country, commanding marks ranging between 82% and 90%.
With thousands more applicants looking for spaces next year and little extra
government funding to accommodate them, universities could be forced to
increase standards to weed out students, registrars say.
The impact of the so-called double cohort has already been felt at UBC,
where applications from students from Ontario high schools doubled this year,
with the number of applications from Toronto increasing to 600, said Holm.
UBC received so many applications last year that it admitted 1,500 students
more than the government funded.
With applications continuing to leap upwards, UBC has committed to
over-enrolling another 600 students who will not be funded by the government,
bringing the undergraduate population to about 27,300 next fall.
"If we don't take those students, we would have to raise our grade point
average to a ridiculously high value, and we don't think that's fair,''
said Holm.
He attributes the increase to a growing population of 18-to-24-year-olds
in Vancouver.
"So we are going to try to absorb them. It's not going to be easy,
but we are going to be creative," he added.
The influx of students last fall meant living rooms in the university
residences were converted to bedrooms.
Classrooms were overcrowded, and many students had to sign up for courses
they were not necessarily interested in taking since their first choices
were full.
"We just don't have the infrastructure to support this many students,"
said Tara Learn, a vice-president at UBC's student association,
the Alma Mater Society.
Simon Fraser University, long seen as playing second fiddle to UBC,
has been catching up to its neighbour.
Last year, the Burnaby school boasted some of Canada's top entrance marks --
82% in the arts, 78% in science, 88% in commerce and 89% in engineering.
Although SFU has not seen the same overall spike in applications,
competition for the school's specialized commerce and computer engineering
programs is so fierce it will likely not be admitting students with marks
lower than 90%, said Ron Heath, the registrar.
After the deadline for applications closed at the end of March,
Holm's office began receiving calls from nervous parents and
anxious students wondering whether they would make the cut.
He points out that although UBC's new grades are high, they are termed
"interim marks.''
That means they will likely only apply to the school's first round of
admissions, added Holm.
As the university sends letters of acceptance to students throughout
the summer, the minimum grades will fall several percentage points.
