Title: Flavor Conversion of Supernova Neutrinos
Abstract: A core-collapse supernova naturally emits neutrinos and antineutrinos of all flavors, each with distinct luminosities and energy spectra. Within the dense and anisotropic stellar interior, these neutrinos can interact through neutrino–neutrino forward scattering, leading to collective growth of flavor that occurs much faster than the usual flavor conversions in vacuum or ordinary matter. Such collective neutrino flavor evolution, arising in neutrino-dense environments, exhibits rich nonlinear behavior and is typically categorized into two regimes — ''slow'' and ''fast''.
In our joint presentation, we will first discuss the slow collective neutrino flavor conversion, followed by my discussion on the fast ones. Together, we will explore the characteristics of slow and fast flavor conversions, the conditions under which they arise, the initial growth of such flavor instability, and their impact on the final neutrino flavor composition. We will also touch upon their potential implications for stellar evolution and various astrophysical and nuclear processes. Finally, we will outline approximate methods for incorporating these sub-centimeter scale flavor conversion effects into large-scale, computationally expensive supernova hydrodynamic simulations.
