Title: Gravity for field theorists
Abstract:
General Relativity (GR) is widely accepted to correctly describe gravity at low energies, which describes the effects of gravitation in terms of the non-linear evolution of spacetime itself. While this geometric picture of GR is indispensable for relativists working on gravity, a different and arguably more fundamental perspective is that gravity is the theory of a non-trivial interacting theory of massless spin-2 particles.
In the first half of this talk, my aim is to introduce gravity to a field theory audience by making this connection explicit, drawing heavy parallels with electromagnetism. In the second half, I will switch gear and talk about recent work on electromagnetic duality symmetries for spin-1 and -2 fields in four dimensions, and how to make these manifest at the level of the action.
